I can finally buy tangs.. agot nothing on me :fun2: jk jk

anyways. Now I have a 10x3x3 tank total 650gal. With sump I'll be looking at around 1000gal.

Currently designing the rocks. Minimalist design in mind. lots of swimming room.

so... what type of tangs and how many :D ???

There's a couple specific tangs I really want:

1) 2-3 YB Blue Tang
2) 1 Purple tang (already have one)
3) 1 Desjardini
4) 1 Achilles Tang
5) 1 Black tang
6) 1 Sohal tang
7) Gem tang would be the dream some day

These are the tangs I know of.. and kind of like based on their look. Any recommendation on how to add them? all at once? few at a time? same body type together?

any other tangs you can recommend? not looking for algae eating workers.. looking for show fish

Beside tangs, I'll be adding small fish. (wrasse, clowns, anthias etc) So I'd like a few large tangs to contrast.

thank you!

Purple tang-Sailfin tang-Black tang-gem tang are all Zebrasomas, they'll have problems with each other. Your purple tang is likely establishing itself already in your aquarium so it has unofficially become the king of your tank. Any other zebrasomas will not be welcomed.

Sohals and Achilles are Acanthurus species so they will not like each other.

I would add all at the same time as much as possible. That's your key to success at this point. I've had success by just having one of each of the tang species in my 8 footer, aggression is kept at a minimum.

One Zebrasoma (Sailfin)
One Ctenochaetus (Tomini)
One Naso (Vlamingii)
One Acanthurus (Fowleri)

and one Dory (forgot the latin name for that one :/

The tank is still too small for an A. sohal. I would skip on that one unless you want to get your other fish sliced and diced to sashimi.

Paracanthurus
There are possibly 2 species

Tank is plenty large enough for a Sohal, tankmates and size it added at will be the crucial things. Small Sohals will cause less damage to tankmates when aggression happens but large adults that are collected large tend to be much more laid back. Either way it needs to be the last fish added and it is a risk like Roewer mentioned

Achilles is hard to maintain and does not like many other tangs with it especially other Acanthurus species (sohal)

Even though you already have several Zebrasomas, I have to say, I cannot imagine a tank without a yellow tang. IMO they are definitely one of the most beautiful tangs.

I also love blonde naso tangs. Very pretty, big, and good personality/temperament. AND feed them a nori algae clip once a day, and they grow incredibly fast.

Anyone else had luck adding smaller rather than larger? I feel like adding smaller lets established tang be dominant, without two tangs shredding each other to pieces.

what about angels and butterflies? it would be nice to have a mix of tangs, angels and butterflies

just for fun if i had your tank size id have a list like this:
purple tang
powder blue tang
sohal tang
gem tang
moorish idol
regal angel
goldflake angel
imperator angel
bandit angel
some of the smaller pygmy angels (joculator, flame, multicolor)
semilarvatus butterfly
tinker or declivis butterfly

:) sorry, i know it's not what you asked but im just day dreaming.
congrats on the awesome new tank

wow! I didn't know sohal was that much of an issue. LA said 250gal. I thought my 10ft tank would be plenty enough. I will definitely keep that purchase last. might just skip on it. if 10ft tank doesn't work for a tang, it seriously shouldn't be sold. who else can keep one?

definitely! I have a few tanks now with a few angels inside. They will slowly go into the DT. (gold flake, blue line, 2 regal, moorish idol, copperband)

well seeing how troublesome they are.. I think I'll just cut down on my list and replace them with smaller fish.

the purple will be inside already. I'll add the other 5 at once.

1) 3 YB Blue Tang
2) 1 Purple tang (already have one)
3) 1 Desjardini
4) 1 Achilles Tang

any recommendation on what type of fish I can get for schooling? no chromis please

too bad about the Sohal.. I really like that fish. but I prefer a peaceful tank much more
