stuff that didn't work for me

in order to possibly save others some money/livestock/heartache (and to remind myself in the future) I'm compiling a list of products (and perhaps some practices) that didn't work for me. That doesn't necessarily mean these things won't work for others, (or perhaps for myself in a different application/situation) but perhaps you should do some more research. Consider yourself forwarned! So without further ado, here's the list to avoid in my opinion:

*certain Rio pumps. Infamous reef wreckers. If you've been around here long enough you know that specific models melt down. I can't recall all the models right now- maybe somebody can find them and post them later in this thread.

*Via-Aqua pumps. I love these things but they just don't last as long as they should because their impellers have a nasty habit of letting corrosion form inside their protective covering.

*Crystal Seas saltmix. This one should be at the top of my list. If you didn't start your reef aquarium up with this stuff don't ever use it. Nobody that I know of has figured out why switching to it causes the problems that it does but many experienced reefkeepers are well aware this stuff can spell death for reef animals. (I love the MEI scoop cup, though. I can make 55 gallons of 1.025 SG saltwater with it every time.)

*CPR overflows. A waste of plastic and an accident waiting to happen- even with the aqualilifter mod. Upgrade to a Lifereef, Amiracle or knockoff of one of these two designs ASAP or drill your tank. Get hip or get wet!

*'Black Powder' by Marc Weiss. Very expensive stuff (or should I say fluff) that is a total waste of money IMO. I was PO'd after purchasing a can of this powder- the bag inside was a fraction of the size of the can. (What a catchy marketing name, though!)There are other products with Weiss's name on them you'd better research before using, too. Arghhh. Makes me want to take out my frustrations at a shooting range.

*the Eco-Aqualizer. Sorry, Bob- I lost some respect for certain individuals after this marketing scam was unleashed on the aquarium world. Remember when several RC members gutted one of these things to discover it's mystic inner secrets? An insult to the anyone smarter than a first grader.

to be continued...

I'd tell you what's inside but then I might get in trouble

J/K

There's a magnet inside the tube. Amazing, eh?
You found good reviews of an Eco-Aqualizer? This is disconcerting news. Where did you search for reviews of it

Another thing that ****es me off is when these water purity companies sell people water purification systems that are nothing more than a sediment filter, carbon filter, and maybe a de-ionization filter. They charge anywhere from 300-600 to install it under your sink, and then they charge you $100 to replace a filter.

Purple Up, Liquid reactor, etc
I considered including these here but I didn't because they DO work to a certain extent. The ingredients that make up each of these products can be purchased separately for far less money... and if you run a reef aquarium at proper levels of Ca, alk, Mg, etc. these two products aren't necessary. Though I wouldn't recommend using them I don't feel PU or LR fall into the same category as those products I listed in my first post.

Second the cpr overflows. Fortunately I used them in the unfinished basement. I added the aqualifters to them after flood number one. After flood number two I modified them successfully by palcing them in a container by the road.Other mistakes I made:

Hydor rotating deflectors makes my list. They just stop spinning after a while.

Garlic extreme and other Garlic elixers. They just don't do anything. Maybe a bit of appetite enhancement but I'm not sure of that either.

Trace element supplements.

Kent Rxp for ich. It's just pepper.

Went through several hydrometers before I got a refractometer.

I'm sure I've made or am making other mistakes but can't figure them out yet.

Seaclone Protein Skimmer - It's not as bad as Black Powder or the Eco-Aqualizer but I would still avoid them if possible.

ahh yes, the good 'ol Sea Clown :jester:

I'm not a fan of Hydor rotating devices, either.

Seaclone Protein Skimmer +2. its junk on anything larger than a 20 gallon.

ill add one

-powersweep powerheads (they clog, and dont "sweep" after 2 weeks)

I have another one that seems like a money saver but ends up being a money waster...

The SCWD (Switching Current Water Director) - IME these things only last a few months then they get stuck and there is no way to take them apart and fix/clean them. I would avoid these if at all possible.

BTW I second the powersweep, Caveat emptor!

lol it is funny that you guys dont like swing arms... they are nice and fast and easy. all you need to do is check them against a refractometer and mark there accuracy...they are sooo cheep. i have one next to my display and one in the basement next to my sump. much easyer than having to look for the refractometer.

crushed coral god that stuff is BAD

i guess that would depend on the critters in the tank and how deep the bed is. i know a few beautiful tanks that have crushed coral bottoms in them.
