Stunning Red haddoni at LFS...

I saw a stunning Red haddoni at a local LFS today but his mouth seemed to be gaping. I took a picture of it to share and get some comments on its health. Not going to be buying him but just thought he was really stunning.

He's got a heafty $400 price tag on him...

To me size is of no important. I rather have smaller size. The smaller the better. It is incredibly easy to get anemone to grow fast.
That color however is really nice and worth the 400 if healthy

That is a great color

I paid more than $400 for mine and his coloring was not a nearly as nice as that, more pink than red.

That is a good deal for a anemone that look that good

I think it looks ok. It doesn't look like it has enough sand to bury itself in. Curious as to which LFS was carrying that anemone? I don't make it north often, but the few stores I've been to would not carry something like that. PM me so I can add it to my list of places to check out.

It won't last long at that price I have seen them go for over $700 for any red Haddoni. That one there is special I just hope that the person who buys it knows how to treat it and take care of it. That is a show stopper there.

It's a crap shoot. A gaping mouth is definitely not a good sign. A closed mouth with exposed siphonoglyphs is better. Tough decision for me since I'm jaded after losing my red after attempted treatment. I think if someone were to purchase it, they'd need to go in knowing that they've got a 50/50 chance of survival. Given my successes with Cipro, I think I was over confident when I picked up my red Haddoni. I didn't pay to much attention to its appearance because I thought I could save any anemone with QT and Cipro. Obviously I now know that's not the case.

I can also tell you that I've seen or heard of a few reds come in in the past couple of weeks. My tally is 0 for 2 right now. When I see more than one of these come in, I assume that they all came from the same exporter, so buyer beware.

I have access to a few wholesale distributors and I did see 3 red Haddoni come through recently. I dont think that this is one of them because the color looks a lot better but there might be one collector who has gotten a few of them and then sent them out to the different wholesalers.

I think the ability to come together like this is great. Since we agree that problems start at the export end, if we can isolate certain exporters we'll be able to gauge the success of these nems to a certain degree. We'll need to track who purchases these and how they fare. Obviously this is wishful thinking, but hopefully one day we'll be able to know enough about the supply chain to patronize those who are taking the time to care for the animals while in transit.

I don't think you will ever be able to track the supply chain to help you determine which supplier is good and not good and here is why... Let say I see XYZ wholesaler has a bunch of carpets come in and the pictures show the mouth gaping. No wholesaler is going to hold those carpets because they know a large percentage of them will die. ($$$$) So they are going to unload them as quickly as possible. Lets also say I see them and then come on a public forum and say XYZ got XXX but dont buy them. How do u think that company would react when they find out ? Also it would be problematic because I dont know who that wholesaler sells too .. Most of the livestock comes through either LA or Miami and then its shipped across the entire US to retailers and LFS. The only people who really know where all the live stock goes too are the wholesalers themselves and they are not going to disclose to the public what goes on. In my exp I have found that each wholesaler is really good in one area of livestock and ok in others so that is why I use multiple companies for the goods I like. It would be nice to be able to track from the collection point to your home but it involves too much proprietary information that companies are just not going to disclose. In fact from a business stand point the less that the public knows the better.

As I said, it's simply wishful thinking and I agree that we'll probably never know. But there are wholesalers, like Quality Marine, that encourage LFS to use their labels, so customers know exactly where the livestock is coming from. And, if you're in good terms with your LFS, they will tell you who the wholesaler was for a particular animal.

In terms of how a company would react, I would hope that they'd do better the next time -- as in they'd work with the exporter to make sure the animals are well cared for. Again, just wishful thinking. But it has to start somewhere, just like cyanide caught fish were once widely accepted.
