Stupid mistake & stupid question

I was moving my tank off the stand so I could paint the inside and broke the barb off of the 1-1/4" drain bulked fitting. The threaded part is still fine. Will a standard PVC female adaptor thread onto what's left? I would just go with hard PVC rather than the washing machine hose type drain.

Bulkhead internal threads are standard pipe threads, so any standard threaded pipe fitting should work, if thats what you are asking. Just match the nominal size of the fitting to that of the bulkhead (1-1/4 you said) and its fine.

I meant the outside threads.

No, PVC threads will not work on the outside threads of a bulkhead. PVC fittings would require the bulkhead to have MIPT threads (Male Iron Pipe Threads) on the outside, and the threads on the outside of a bulkhead are straight threads, not tapered as Iron Pipe Threads are.

Can't tell exactly what you broke, but if you broke the nut to the bulkhead, you need a bulkhead nut; PVC fittings won't fit.

If you broke a fitting that was glued into the bulkhead, you likely will need to replace the bulkhead. Is it a threaded or slip? A picture or better description would help.

Some tanks come with bulkheads that have a hose barb integrated into the bulkhead itself -assume that's what broke off. If you can remove the bulkhead, saw off any remaining part of the barb, it may be possible to slip weld in some PVC, dunno though, have never tried. Probably the best is just to replace the bulkhead.

Ca1ore. That's what I have and that's what broke. Maybe il just put a fernco on what's left and use hard PVC after that. Don't really need the hose barb part cause I want hard PVC anyhow.

+1
I would just replace the bulkhead with a slip-slip bulkhead. It's doubtful that you could securely attach a pvc pipe or fitting and even if you do, I wouldn't trust it.

As long as the bulkhead broke clean, and didn't crack into the area where you'll clamp the Fernco onto I don't see why that wouldn't work. I have used them in the past for easier disassembly of the drain plumbing attached to external bulkhead threads.

Thanks to all. I will try the fernco,if it clamps on securely il use that , if not il need a good place to get a slip/slip bulked

Lowe's carries a few but probably not big enough for what you want. Overnight from Marine Depot works quite well. Otherwise -- hit a LFS...there's a good chance they'll have something.
