Stupid Question...

So my friend has recently started this hobby and would like to get a Long Tentacle anemone for his tank.
He wanted me to ask here if cutting off all the tentacles to "shorten them" would kill the anemone? Lol I wouldn't let him do that ever and I'm sure he wouldn't he just wants to know, he's pretty new to the hobby.....thanks!

I doubt it would kill it --- since they can recover from having their tentacles chopped off from a powerhead. However, they would just grow back.

Plus -- and more importantly -- if he is thinking about doing that he really should reconsider keeping anemones.

I'm still baffled as to why he'd get an anemone species that's specifically called "long-tentacled" if he wants it to have shorter tentacles... :hmm2:

Hahahaha this cracked me up. Well I'm pretty sure he's just joking (I hope) lol he is.
He's not sure if he should get the long tentacle anemone or a tube anemone. Which are safest with fish? The tube anemones are dangerous right? But are they really that sdangerous that all fish are at risk?

Tube anemones are a danger to all fish!I know a guy who had a 5"inch Sail Fin Tang that was eaten buy a tube anemone!IMO,LTA's are the safest anemone for fish! However,I will not say they will not eat fish. All anemone have the possibility of eaten fish!

First of all his tank isnt established enough for a nem if he just started. Secondly why in the hell would he do such a mean thing?

No offence, but i cant really believe that a tube anemone killed a tang. When anything touches the "tenticles" of a tube anemone, it instantly retracts and a slight touch couldnt possibly kill a fish... And they're filter feeders too... Alot of this information could be wrong...

The anemone was very large and didnt go in all the way.SO some of the tentecals were still out and the tang was already stung and just fell into the tentecals...and boom it was gone.

if he just started in the hobby, inform him how important it is to do research on things before just buying them. a tank needs to be established for 6 months to a year to have proper water parameters to keep an anenome. knowledge is very important in this hobby and you should let him know that.

They eat fish- and can be fairly adept at it. As far as stings go- there are many other true anemones with more powerful stings- but that means nothing- other than they may be more effective hunters. Some of the importers in chicago would put fish with them on shipment days when they had no other room- the tubes were always eating fish. Many of the things that are considered "research" is simply reading and collating information off the net.
