Since you are only doing a 50g water change why not go with a smaller water barrel and mix your own water? It would save you from having to get a bigger pump, running less to mix, and you will save space.

We are 18-days into the cycle. Not a whole lot going on. Not one spot of algae anywhere 
The entire shrimp is gone, without a trace. I've been shadow-feeding every other day. Took the skimmer offline (it has been producing skimmate). Not sure what else to do to get the cycle going.

Same happened with my build, I even added an extra slice of raw tilapia which disappeared. After the shrimp and fish i only had a small ammonia and nitrate reading. Did a few water changes, and started adding fish about a week later. It's been about a month and no issues. All 50 of my hermits are accounted for and I have two skunk cleaner shrimp

Thanks for the info. How large were the water changes as a percentage of tank volume? I may do one this coming weekend.

Not big at all, about 5 gallons a week. I have a ceiling fan almost directly over the tank and the main exhaust from the AC also blows directly over the tank so i have a TON of evaporation, It's getting pretty warm now in Tampa and yesterday i added almost 1 gallon of top off last night and i had done about a 15 gallon water change mid day.

I found that the skimmer had been skimming too wet. Turns out it was in too deep of water as the water is running well over the baffle.
So I used some acrylic I had laying around to raise the skimmer about 3/4"
And about 40 minutes after I turned it back on, it looks like this.
And here is a frag of blasto, which I thought was dead and I had thrown in the fuge to help seed the rock. Along with an empty frag disk and a dead Favia that fell prey to deadly peppermint shrimp, who have since been removed.
And finally, the fuge with a pink slimy algae that is growing on the silicone.
I will be on vacation in a couple of weeks, but will start running the lights shortly thereafter.

A good friend that I don't get to see nearly as often as I should (since he moved to Timbuktu) read on another thread that I am looking for one and posted that it was mine if I came and picked it up. It's a 7-hour drive round trip, but it will be good to see him as its been a while.

Not sure which skimmer that is but doesn't the output need to be above water? Mine was doing the same but I raised it too high, then I lowered it to just touching the water, now I can run it with the valve open further and get some dry skim.
