Stylo328's 187 (60x30x24) Build Thread

Anytime my friend. My QT is your QT.

I had not anticipated how difficult it would be to reduce the salinity. I have been removing 5 gallons of SW per day and replacing with R/O and salinity has only dropped marginally. Yesterday I took out 10 gallons and we still have a ways to go. I will likely do another 10 gallons today. I see no ich on any fish and are eating.

The behavior between the fish has been a bit aggressive. I used egg crate to divide the 75. The smaller fish are able to swim through, but the larger fish are contained on one side. I attribute the behavioral issues to the lack of hiding spaces. I added more PVC but it didn't really help.

maybe you can setup a drip in drip out system, one bucket dripping water in and one bucket under the tank getting water dripped in to it. it may be gentler on the fish than 5-10 gallons at a time but you will have to check your salinity every 30 min or so. maybe you can check craigslist for some fake coral decorations for the QT?

I totally agree with Sonic as I use that same procedure when bringing the tank down to hypo and right back up to hypo. Way less stressful on the fish.

Thanks for the advice guys.

When I pull the five or 10-gallons, the water is replaced with an R/O drip over the course of a few hours. Is that ok? Or should I drip as the r/o is being added?

I think that would work as well except for the few inches of swim area lost until it refills, plus aren't you taking a chance forgetting the ro is running?

That almost happened. Lol

We were sitting outside on the patio and I jumped out of the chair, having just remembered. Fortunately I got it in time.

AHAHA, i guess we have your attention now!!lol just kidding, sometimes it sounds like we know what we are talking about because it has happened to us. I too left my RO running this Saturday and jumped up in a panic, but then realized not only that i installed a float valve, but i was filling 60 gallons with a 75 gpd RO/DI unit and still had 4 hrs or so left to go...LOL

Definitely got my attention!

I have been thinking of adding an osmolator or something similar solely for the alarm function. I am not sure if a similar product already exists to exclusively provide an alarm with a float switch. I could use it now for the QT and later move it to the r/o reservoir to avoid overflowing it when filling.

My apex has a breakout box that I can put a float on. If that float is open/closed for too long I can make it play a melody or send an e-mail.

I've been considering getting a reefangel. Maybe I should just stick to an Apex Lite or a Junior

Sadly the powder Blue Tang did not make it through QT. I woke yesterday to find him stiff. I'm not sure why he died. He has been in Hypo for over a week and was eating pellets, roger's reef food, and mysis. He even ate the night before I found him. All other fish in QT seem to be doing fine. But that is of little comfort as the PBT looked great right up until he died.

I am going to buy Dr G's medicated food today and feed that exclusively in QT.

Also going to shorten the photo-period. I have the lights mounted as high as I can, at least 24" from waterline, and several corals are lightening up in color since placed in the tank last week. It's odd, because I see physical growth, but the lightening of color is very noticeable.

Going to run the actinics (2 super blue bulbs) 11-hours and run the remaining bulbs for only 7-hours. Hopefully this will allow the corals to color back up to their previous intensity.

Sooo sorry to hear about the PBT, that is my favorite fish, did you check for Ammonia?

I just bumped my LED's up to 52% intensity from 46%.

just went through this thread start to finish. wow! great build. I really like your stand and how you keep everything so clean! I just bought a used 90 and am hoping to accomplish something similar to this!

Thanks Sonic. I used the hang-on filter with bio-wheel on the QT that I've had running for over a year. I also threw rock rubble from the 20 in there. There may have been an ammonia spike though.

In retrospect I wish I would have purchased the dimmable ATI. Live and learn.

Thanks for the kind words. We tried to take our time and get it just the way we wanted. Good luck with the build out of the 90. Keep us posted with your progress.

I am almost positive that is what did my two wrasse in, I have a pair of Mandarins and a cherub pygmy angel i am picking up in an hour from r2go. They are going into the QT that has been housing my other male Banggai and the ball of chaeto i picked up from NewbieAQ. i will be testing params before they go in and everyday after, with a 1 gallon water change nightly.
