Just ordered an Achilles and a purple tang from liveaquaria. Turns out both were on sale this week. Much less than the LFS and a 14-day guarantee. Hard to beat that.
Had a great time at the PBMAS frag swap today. I kind of kept to my list (got the sarmentosa instead of a granulosa) and came home with eight healthy frags.
Yellow milli
Pink milli
Rainbow milli
Green slimer (peach/orange tips?)
ORA Turquoise stag
ORA Pearlberry
Christmas mirabilis
Glow stick sarmentosa
Did some re-aquascaping and moved some of the previous frags around. I am pleased overall.
Today was also my first time using the bayer complete as a dip. I did 20ml of bayer per cup of tank water for 15 minutes. I then dipped each coral in three subsequent containers of tank water to thoroughly rinse them out.
Also received confirmation that the Achilles and purple tangs will ship out tomorrow and will arrive on Tuesday. Since I tore down the 75qt, I will likely be setting up the 20 as a QT tonight. I have plenty of live rock in the sump of the DT (at least 20 pounds) that I can transition over. This should make for a descent QT as a temporary holding/ feeding spot for both tangs as they are small.
Recently I noticed that there was a collection of fish passings in the front corner of the tank. It seemed odd, given that the flow on that side of the tank works away from the glass. I siphoned it out and started paying attention. Incredibly, the mimic yellow tang goes to that corner and poops. I have now caught him on several (more than five) occasions doing this.
Here are some pictures from just now, after a full siphoning and water change yesterday evening.
So, yesterday I received my order from LiveAquaria, a small purple tang and a small/medium Achilles tang. I drip acclimated both into a 20-gallon QT I set up just for them. The tank was set up with T5s, established live rock (from the DT sump) and a HOB filter.
Within two hours of going into the QT, both were picking at nori. I came home today to find the nori consumed. This evening I fed brine shrimp, which after some hesitation, the Achilles tang took to. I'd estimate that he ate 25-40. The purple tang took, but subsequently spit out the brine. He is continually eating nori though.
I also halved a fresh clam from the grocery store and placed both halves on the floor. Neither fish has paid attention to the clam as of yet. Any idea how long I should keep the halves in there?
Here are a few pictures to make the long post worth the read
Lovin the achilles!!, sorry i cant stand purples or yellows...lol i wouldn't keep the clam halves in there for more than a day. maybe take them out and mix them with the brine shrimp and feed them as bits instead of a whole chunk
Clams came out today. I did catch the purple picking at them.
I did a small water a change on the QT. Both fish are feeding on nori and the Achilles is readily consuming brine shrimp. Both have a nice full belly. I am optimistic they will make it. All other fish in DT are doing well.
Fish list as if today.

glad to hear things are coming along, please correct me if i am wrong but i thought brine shrimp had little to no nutritional value. I thought i read that somewhere so i switched to mysis shrimp soaked in zoe and selcon.

You are 100% correct. But it is a good transition food for newly caught fish who need to learn to eat in captivity. They have little nutrition value, but are attractive to the fish and encourage feeding. Then they can be transitioned to other foods. Live blood worms also work.
Thanks Buddy. So far he is eating nori, live brine and is picking at frozen mysis. The bulk of his diet is nori though.
The little purple tang on the other hand is eating everything that floats by. He will likely go into the DT first, maybe next weekend.
I added a few frags today, a Yellow chalice, Ultra green monti Cap, Miyagi tort, Steve Elias stag, and a yellow plating acro (maybe a tort or a pichoni?)
Ruby-head fairy wrasse is holding strong. Still eating and swimming around. The sirenian his side appears to be getting better. Achilles continues to graze almost exclusively on nori, while the purple tang is eating anything that floats by.
