Substrate for fuge

I finally finished my DIY fuge and I am ready to get it working. What kind of substarte should I use inthe fuge and is cheato better than caulerpa??

I used mineral mud with 1 inch gravel above. My cheato grows faster then i can give away. there is some caulerpa in there also but i think the cheato keeps it at bay.

I don't have a substrate in my refugium at all. The mud seems a bit messy for my tastes, and I'm not sure that it does all that much.

My sump doesn't have any substrate in it either, just chaeto.

i used a deep sand bed, with cheato, and live rock, and have gone from 20 ppm nitrates to 0ppm, who hooo

I also have a DSB in the fuge. About 3 inches.

Great Thread. I always thought that i need to have a sandbed in my fuge. Considering that im going through great lengths to get the aragonite reef sand all the way to Lebanon, id rather use all of it in my display. Maybe ill toss a couple live rock rubble pieces in the fuge with the cheato.

I also saw someone using a MH bulb and lamp fixture from HD and getting excellent Cheato growth.. Gonna go th HD this afternoon and check them out.

I have just lr in my fuge and cheato, i am going to get some sand, and thinking of doing a DSB, my perams are 0, but i might not do it.
