Suction Cups

Cant comment on those lifters, but at 7 bucks I would purchase one and check it out first.

But also, why buy 8 of them instead of renting?

You know where I rent them for less than 40-50 bucks? Usually they charge rental per each, or maybe per set of two. I've never heard of an "as many as you need" rental option.

We used a set of 'appliance' moving straps from HD or Lowes for $10 or $15. They have loops at the ends for your arms, but we put a long 2x4 through each side and that way 6 or 8 guys can all get in on the lifting. I was surprised at how well they worked and we've used them several more times for big moves in our local club.

I thought about doing that, but was concerned at the width. The tank itself is already 36" wide, factoring in the 2x4 supports would take it out of the realm of my doorway opening. It's only 25" high, but I feel scared to turn it on its side. I wonder if the side panel can support the weight for 30 to 90 seconds to get it through the doorway? Any one with experience?

We used suction cups to move my tank, but they were the large single cup version. Can't say I feel comfortable with these being $7.50 vs the ones we had were around $40-50 apiece. We used some similar to these: Suction Cups. The double cup design claim they do the same amount of weight and have good reviews, so maybe it's worth a shot.

I'd do what snulma suggested and purchase one to give it a test if you have plenty lead time still. If it works get 8-10 of them. We used 10 on my tank which I'm guessing is right around the same weight.

Alternatively you might try contacting Custom Aquariums to see if they'd rent you a kit. The price is high since they make you pay the entire cost up front, then refund it once you send them back. So you could get 8 or 10 for the same price as renting a couple from a local rental shop. They may not rent them to someone that didn't buy a tank from them though.

I have one of the HF ones from your link. It held a 3' × 6' mirror. Can't comment past that...

Well, I ended up ordering 8 of them. They're supposedly rated for 175 lbs apiece. Using 8 distributes the weight down to about 60ish each. Now I'm feeling nervous after a couple of the responses. I guess I'll find out in a few weeks.

I turned my 270g tank on it's face (on moving blankets) to get it through the door. No issues there.
As far as those suction cups, I would be very cautious. The ones made for heavy lifting have a plunger to pump for removing air, while the ones pictured have a simple level. Can't imagine they would hold much weight for very long.

It'll be about 50' total, from the back of the truck to the stand. I'm glad to know I can flip it up sideways though. Ya, I'm super paranoid about it. I'm thinking 6 guys, each with one hand on a handle and one hand under the tank.

I have used the ones you linked. My recommendation is to thoroughly clean the surfaces and make sure they are attached very well. I did have a couple slip off.

Thank you! I'm glad someone actually has used them. Good advice, I'll be sure to do that. How big was the tank you moved?
