Suggestion box for new BOD

I am going to start a new thread here, for members to post thier suggestions to help improve the club and provide suggestions for activities.

Looking forward to hearing from the members.

Please keep this thread positive and keep it constructive. This thread is not intended to generate negative criticism but to provide good new ideas to make NCPARS a better organization.

Thanks,

sanjay.

not a member, but would like to be again....

how about some contests for give-aways such as gift-certs good toward purchases at the next swap, or free raffle tickets for the swap, etc.

Ideas:
Photo contests of specific corals, fish, neatest tank rooms, dirtiest tank rooms (cause I'd win that hands down!), etc

How about a "good-citizenship" award each month in between swaps for members that go out of their way to help other members with their tanks (ahem...lifting a 1000lb tank count?)

Educational opportunities always abound like free demo days where people can come drill glass, make a sump of acrylic, etc.

Let's get back to being more of a "social" thing and less of a $$ thing?

Interesting in becoming a member but the one thing that is keeping me from doing so is all of the beuracracy that seems to go on. Looks like politics is more important that enjoying the hobby.

As new member, I would like to say that I am excited to be involved, although I am about 2 hours north of Williamsport, I plan to be as active as I can. From the meeting that was held Saturday, it seems to me that there are some dedicated members and I did catch the hub-bub about a few members slinging mud...It happens in all clubs, committees and organizations...so please don't let that stuff get you down. It will take me awhile to get to know everyone by name and I will do my best to learn them quickly. I have not had time to read the entire booklet of by-laws...but I would like to throw my 2 pennies in...... With any organization such as a club...you have to have goals to work for. Do we have an established goal in writing? From my past experience, one thing that sometimes gets forgotten is to have fun!! No-one wants to be part of a club or group if it is not fun. I will take the time to search the NCPARS site and find all the activities that we as a club are part of so I can see where I can help the most.

P.S. I did not get a membership card on Saturday...can someone send me one?

I wanted to add some things that I had looked into for when the club was ready. Many of these take a lot more money in the bank than we had, and with all the people complaining that we had too much money (when we don't) I never bothered to mention this stuff. It also takes participation..which was low too...but if the club starts to grow again we can look into these things...

Since I'm on my way out here, I thought I throw in my $0.02 now and let you know some of the things I thought about as well as researched....

Member Education Reimbursement Program:
Have a set amount (something like $1000 a year) given to fund a program that allows members to submit their receipts to seminars or other reefkeeping related gatherings (NON-NCPARS) to be refunded a certain amount. The committee would need to pre-approve to make sure there is funding left for the year and that the event is acceptable for the program. Each member would be limited to submitting a set amount per year..like $25 per member or $35 per family membership members and on a first reserved first served basis.

Baltimore Aquarium Trip:
NCPARS gets the bus, we start at PSU go cross state and down to Baltimore. The rates for a group of 10 or more:
Adults: $21.50
Seniors (ages 60 and up): $20.50
Students (ages 12 to18): $15.50
Students (ages 3-11): $13.50
..There is also a 1 hour behind the scene tour of the shark exhibit for $315 for 10 people...this would include the admission to the aquarium. I thought NCPARS could pay the $10 (or so) to upgrade 10 lucky people to have the tour. There's a dolphin one too but that's twice as long and twice as much ($575).

Traveling Tank Exhibit:
Instead of the hefty expense of setting up a permanent system in a school, we work with vendors to develop a semi-portable system. The system would spend a month or two at a school, or some other location and them be relocated to the next stop. The tank would need to break down easy (a few large Mo-Rocks would do it) and then the livestock could be sold off every swap and more bought new so the poor creatures don't become permanently messed up from constant travel. This would take a lot of organization and people willing to give presentations, prepare handouts, and be available for emergencies. Each place we'd have to teach a handful of people to maintain it for the duration.

I had some other thoughts too..but that's enough for now. :)

Right now the BOD is passing around the concept of an Atlantis Aquarium trip since that is a nicer reef and closer. We'll see what develops from that first. If that gets a good response, they can consider Baltimore. I only posted it because I'm trying to back off on my involvement to save my sanity.. :) ..but since I had looked into it I thought I'd share what I found. I know I'd be up for it too..although ever since they replaced the shark exhibit with the fish exhibit I haven't been as impressed. If the sea horse exhibit ever comes back I would definitely want to see that again..that was an awesome exhibit.

I went through the earlier threads of suggestions, and this is most of the ideas grouped under several topics. We have already been doing some of these in NCPARS, and many others have been talked about. But this is a pretty complete list of ideas that were thrown out, I think.

New and more events / activities
1. Group trips, bus trips
2. BBQs
3. Group buys, probably done through the local vendors that support the club
4. Monthly educational club meetings (rotating around)
5. Meetings besides swaps / put people in touch for regional meetings. Set up several small groups; groups could still be part of NCPARS, with local meetings in person. Local group could do local tank tours, or help out with a hands on demo, fragging, coral placement, or just chat about fish. NCPARS could provide names of people in a region to 1 coordinator.

Education and spreading the knowledge of reefs
1. We need to do more work to support educational activities, either through donations or helping members become active in local schools or other settings.
2. Go to schools/colleges on our own. Train them, donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t run the tanks for them.
3. Become active on our clubââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s website to help newcomers in the hobby
4. Offer demonstrations at LFS and other clubââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s events
5. For our own education, bring in speakers, run demos and workshops

More contact between BOD & members
1. Notification of club status, events and decisions in a timely manner. Update website regularly
2. Post minutes of BOD meetings
3. All members should feel that they can contact the BOD and their situation, idea, etc. will be handled to the best of the BODââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s ability.
4. Some open membership meetings, maybe monthly. 1 monthly whole NCPARS meeting online via AIM or netmeeting or something similar. The Monthly Online meeting could be nothing more than a group of BOD available for a few hours to hear concerns and answer questions. A newsletter could fill in the happenings of the month for people that could not attend the live chat.
5. Update website regularly

Utilize the benefits that the NPO has to offer the club
1. Easier for sponsors to donate
2. Look into government grants and programs to use towards education

Swaps
1. Have more swaps, 3 or 4 per year
2. Have same number of swaps (2) as current
3. Hold swaps at different locations
4. Clear time agenda at swaps (trade 11-2, 2 PM meeting, 2:30 raffle) and stick to it.
5. Bigger raffles including livestock, dry goods, gift certificates, etc.
6. More door prizes for new members and children in the hobby
7. Club meetings at the beginning of each swap (this allows a better opportunity for members, BOD and others to bring up topics, ideas, etc. while everyone is present)
8. Less raffle pressure at swaps
9. Fragging demos at swaps

Donations
1. Bigger donations from NPO
2. Good prices on manufacturer products
3. Donations going to schools, for instance gathering equipment to form a full tank setup for a school

Direct member benefits
It would be nice if club membership brought vendor discounts

More advertisement for club events

Newsletter

More volunteers

More interaction between NCPARS and other clubs

Join masna. (they help many clubs getting started and being a member of masna opens the door to the possiblity of ncpars hosting macna)

Get sponsors more involved with the club, and get club members to support club sponsors
1. They could offer demos
2. They could attend meetings in person
3. Club members should support sponsors
