Sulfur DeNitrators

Well-

The unit is currently up and running. I had a problem keeping the siphon from the main tank to the unit. Problem fixed.

It is currently running in a closed fashion for the 2 hours per the instructions, then I will run it a 1 drip per second for the next 3 days.
After that, I can go between 3-6 drips per second.

As of right now, my readings are as follows:

Ph - 8.1-8.3(swing from night to day) measured with a milwaukee meter
Calcuim- 445.1-464.5 (measured with a Pinpoint calcuim meter)
Salinity - 1.024-1.025 (measured with a pinpoint meter)
Alkalinity - 180 ppm (measured on a Hagen test kit)
Nitrites - 0 (measured on a Hagen test kit)
Nitrates - 30-35 or so (measured on a strip and also a seachem test kit)

I will take more reading this weekend after I get it in the full drip mode.

I have one coming very soon - will try to post before and after and the experience of getting it going.

could you pls describe the siphon issue and solution so I can get past that if needbee - thanks to you

I am trying to envision fileter the intake sionce the tube is smallish and particles (like my wandering bubble algae) does not clog the intake

Real stupid problem:

I had a bad suction cup on the airline hose holder. Every few hours or so the tube would pop out of the overflow and fall to the floor.

I used a rubber band on my durso standpipe and attached it that way.

Currently it is dripping out at 1 drip/second until this time Friday, then I will measure the output for No2/No3 to see what's happening.

good luck - remember things don't always happen as fast as we would like them - and post your results - I'll be interest in what is coming out as it's bacteria get established/happy

I just got a second job and now I can afford it. I just ordered one. I'll report back on my experiences as soon as I get news.

I'm starting with 70+ nitrates, and a heavy heavy bio load in my 300 gal reef.
XL regal, XL yellow tang, large powder blue, large kole, large copperband butterfly, 3 large clowns, 4 gobies,,, and a few others. I bought the denitrator because I want to add a clown trigger and maybe a queen angel. Yeh I know they are not reef safe but I'll train 'em.

LMAO! I hope you can, and let me know if you do ! :-)

So is this denitrator working for you?

Too early to tell.
I'm still in the cycling period @ 1 drip per second.
tonight I will increase the drip rate to about 3 per second.

I did test the effluent last night (thursday).

It tested with trace no2 and no3.

After day 1 (wednesday) I tested no No2 and tank-level No3 (about 35ppm)

Pickupman66, when I get them I'll send you a picture of the Queen Angel kissing the Clown trigger in front of a blue tip acropora... LOL

Got mine - how do the strips work - no directions on colors, etc - dipped one in tank and colors did not change

did you have a rough time getting your ehiem to get good flow - having trouble getting air out

how do you open the bleeder valve - can't seem to figure it out and I have a well documented respectable IQ

just to let yall know, my DIY De-nitrator coil has completely eliminated my nitrates. they are undectable on test. have it at a good fast drip. took approx 6 weeks to cycle, and it is working perfectly. best advice I can give is invest in a good valve. I test the effluent by just running it into test tube to the specified volume for the test. I had nitrates over 150ppm, and those have been eliminated. I feed once daily either flake or Cyclopeze and one cube of emerald entree. 9 fish total. Watanebei angel, Purple tang, 2 firefish gobies, 2 bar gobies, 1 false percule, 1 bicolor blenny, 1 diamond goby. 75 gallon tank, setup for 5.5 years. last water change was Jan 12.
