Surprise gift from step dad jump starts my new build!!!

Congrats on the new tank always fun when your in the planning stages and get to buy all these toys. I agree on the MH I wouldn't buy new there so many people selling them due to leds heat issues and power consumption. Personally I like t5 6x80 t5 you could keep anything in there but that's my opinion and in the end its up to what you want and by the way the vortechs are nice but also heard the tunze 6205 6305 etc are nice with great customer service.

I would go with the full apex not the lite. So much more expansion. Love the fact that I can check everything on my iPhone with the aquanotes app. Also I am switching from T 5's to LED when I get some extra cash. Easy to build check rapidled.com. I have a octopus skimmer it's pretty good.

the 6055 dont really put out a lot of flow -- i had 4 on a 120 and wasnt happy

for metal halide lighting maybe look into the bigger reflectors (u might be able to get away with 2 of them)

wavebox is cool for about a couple months than u dont even notice it

but everything depends on what your going to keep in the tank

skimmers-- there is a guy selling an older octopus for a few hundred on here if he still has it the 250 model only difference is the pumps (but the new pumps are a lot better)

Thanks man and I think Monday and Tuesday are out this week due to kids soccer practices and my buddy coming by Tuesday to measure out the basement, so hopefully Wednesday will work to pick up the Marco rock?!?!

I'm going to do some reading and compare people's experiences with the Tunz'es and the Vortech's and make my decision which I've got plenty of time to do. All this planning already has me losing sleep and it has only just started. :hmm3:

What are you planing on keeping?

I have no idea yet but I was shooting for a pretty wide range of possibilities and flexibility.

Thanks Zero I must admit though I am a little skeptical about LED's mainly because I haven't seen them in action in person. I will be going to rapidled.com today and start reading up. thanks for the tip! I think I'm pretty set on one of the Extreme Octopus skimmers so it's good to know it can hold its own.

When you say bigger reflectors are you referring to 450's or simply larger reflectors on the 250's?!! I never really thought of that, I was always under the impression that 250w would only spread a 2x2 area but if a larger reflector (which I would never see anyways) could expand that area and save me some money it's worth a look! Again thanks for the tip.

No way am I buying a used skimmer unless of course I were to find an absolute steal on one. I'd rather buy new and have it under warranty with brand new pumps.

Thanks again everyone for the support and suggestions. That's one thing I've come to notice after reading these boards for so many years, how it is such a tight knit group of people looking out for each other.

Such a great site Reef Central is. :thumbsup

OK my neighbor dropped off his old 55 today. It was only supposed to have a small pin sized leak but here is what is looked like filled up on my patio. Needless to say I will empty this and cut out all the silicone I can and clean it before trying to reseal it. I'm thinking one tube per corner should do! LMAO

wow, I beg you not to just cut the inside silicone out. I would pull the entire pane and redo it. Or even better purchase a used non leaking 55g or a new one. That makes me nervous and it isn't even mine.

LOL I was going to try it that way with an absolute **** ton of silicone and then let it cure for a day or two before filling it again to test it. I've never pulled a pane off a tank and done that before, are there any youtube instructional videos on that?! Actually the thing is there is hardly any silicone on the inside at all except for the bottom seems. When he dropped it off he tol me he's had it for over twenty years or so and it wasn't even new when he got it. He got it from his boss who had it for ten years or so. LOL

I'll look around for some 'How to' videos and see if I can pull the pane like you suggested. When it was totally filled and shooting water out the sides I was fully prepared for the entire tank to bust apart on my patio. Good times indeed.

I would really think about buying a new one or a non leaking used one. You are taking a huge gamble on a flood and burning up your pumps. Not to mention possible livestock loss.

I "think" you are supposed to let the silicone cure for a few weeks before adding water to the tank. Get a new tank;)

If you cut all the silicone in any corner of the tank you comprmize the entire corner panels you removed it from. A thats holding the tank together at that point is a really really thin amount of silicone inbetween the glass. Thats IT!! It's much cheaper to goto a petco sale and pick it up for 55 bones for brand new trust me.. Everyone here is giving you good advice. Your breaking the number one rule on the fourm. You ask, we tell, you ignore, you might fail? 2-3 months down the road becuse of a blowout. for 55$... tell me is it worth it??

Don't worry everyone I have already started looking for a replacement. After an hour or so after I emptied it I had made up my mind to get a replacement. I know I would never sleep well with that in the back of my mind.

Now I regret never making the 150 mile trip to buy that drilled 125 for $100. :(

I guess it's one more thing I can sell at the garage sale! :)

I have a 110 gal with baffles and drilled for $100.00 if you are interested.

I am having a sump built to fit under my stand. This one is to tall for my needs.

^Wow thanks Dave that's a sweet set up!!! Let me meet with my contractor tonight and then I should have a better idea of what I can fit in my fish room. If things work out I can keep my 75 as a nice QT!

LOL my wife is going to kill me bringing all these tanks into the house. I currently have four right now and if/when I bring this bad boy in she's going to flip! LOL I love it!

Thanks again I will certainly be in touch!

Hi Everyone,

While doing some searching on the web for suppliers and reviews of LED's I came across this company which has a 72" inch model at a reasonable price. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this product!? Thanks

http://www.ledgrowlightsoutlet.com/led-aquarium-lights.html

that looks like it is 300 1w leds for almost $900, i think that you want to use 3w leds. also i only see the measurements for one unit 18.5"x12"x3.5", i think you would need three of those to cover a 6' tank.

so i would say :thumbdown

Thanks Rackman. I am very new to the idea of using LED's for my display but am curious about the potential for long term savings and hassles that can arise from the MH. Any suggestions for my needs?! Thanks again.

i use t5 and am very happy with them, the fact that you want to use 3w instead of 1w is about the extent of my knowledge on leds. sorry i can't help more, but i'm sure someone here has more knowledge.
