SWC 1A Cone skimmer review

JamesD just checked out SWC website and saw the new cones they are working on. They look pretty big. Pretty promising skimmers. Lots of potential if they follow in the footsteps of the 250 1A.

SJM and Mavgi it's all good. There is little left to report on the skimmer. It is just skimming away, and every time I look in the garage at the sump, I get a nice suprise. More skim mate. This thread is pretty much open for discussion for everyone at this point. Just want to invite the newbies and the less tech savy reefers into the discussion, and hopefully they understand this technical stuff. I am personally really interested in it, and am learning from you guys. I haven't paid to much attention to the PF stuff before.

SWC came out with a skimmer that's going to reset the bar for this size skimmer. The consumer is going to really win on this one. For the newbies and less tech knowledgable reefers who need a real world example of why the pump is getting so much attention. This pump is putting out the same air draw as 4+ Sedra 5000's(the kind used on ASM g3's) and only using similar wattage to just 1 Sedra 5000.

I want to see a nog shot of 3 - 4 day to a weeks worth. That would be something you can add!

Scott here is picture of todays 2 days worth to hold you over. I'll try to post again on the 4th day. I doubt that it can wait a whole week before overflowing.

James, did you lower the water level in the skimmer since the original photos? Just curious as to how tall the foam head is. From the pic it seems like you are running the water level really low snd the foam head is just massive.

James, Besides the kill-a-watt readings, and the full cup nog shot, here is another project for you :D
How about a video slowly panning from bottom to top showing how the skimmer runs?

Once you get those done, we'll find something else ;)

Big Jay I was going to open the pump and take some pictures. But decided against it, cause I am loving this skimmer to much and don't want to take it off line. Besides Scott has me running around doing all kinds of stuff, and I wouldn't have time. ;)

Skimmer porn, lol.

And we get excited when the smell could gag a maggot, but we don't flinch any longer.

Skimmer porn. Hahahaha. Thats funny.

Greg I did have the skimmer set low. I was testing it lower on purpose. Here is a picture of how low it was set, taken right after feeding. It really is amazing that this pump is that powerful that the foam is able to climb that high. You got to get one of these.

I think you got a reprieve on the Kill-a-watt testing. I saw it posted on the MSX forum..

PF: .47
Watts: 68
VA: 141
in 8" of water.

That is a very good PF and is what I would have expected. .53 would have been mighty impressive.

Heres a top down photo of the skim mate. Scott I don't know if I can wait for the cup to fill up. It's nasty!! Nasty!!! NASTY!!!!

i've been looking at the smaller version of this skimmer, please keep us posted, i can't wait to see what it does after a week.

Well I asked SWC and MSX about the PF thing. My response from MSX was their test came back .47, and SWC reponse was .53. As others have mentioned, test conditions play a factor, and I'm the first to admit, this is new stuff to me. So here is the picture SWC sent to me of their test findings. Others in the know about these things have mentioned that both numbers are very good, with one of the numbers being on the great side. I'll take either and be happy with the physical results, in the dark skimmate the skimmer produces. I hate to predict anything, cause anything can happen, but with the proven track record of the Red Dragon, and the proven track record of the Airstar. And with this version using the same engine. With PF numbers like those, all things point to everything being long term reliable. Nothing seems to point to the contrary.

I've stopped and started the pump over 20 times for various reasons, with immediate start up upon getting juice. So the reliability factor is also pointing in the right direction. Hopefully more people will be getting theirs soon, and they can add some of their own experiences and reviews of the product. After all it's that feedback that forces skimmer companies to improve their products. And that's what we all want as consumers.
