Swimming pool conversion into Reef Aquarium

some pictures taken at night with LED effects in place

and it looks like their private night security found a new favorite route to walk during their night checks

How are you going to manage the nutrient export in this former swimming pool? I can't recall if you had mentioned any bio-mechanical filters. Otherwise emerald green waters will block views of the expensive koi. :)

Fish, plants, plenty of aeration, and a filter basket work just fine on our pond. The water is crystal clear. We clean the (minimal) debris in the filter basket once every couple of weeks and we're golden.

Our pond is smaller (about 5000 gallons) but I do have a 20,000 gallon swimming pool. Hmmmm...

This pond is effing nuts! I cannot believe you accomplished such amazing results, especially in such a short amount of time.

Great job!

Marcos

PS. Those security guards are tiny. I think the Koi could take them. :lmao:

maybe i missed something, but shouldnt it be conversion into reef tank?

we had been thinking about it for a long time but for now we still didnt come up with a good solution to work around the heavy monsoon rains and the effect on salinity when they happen.... still listening to any suggestions

Free water from the ocean. Having a loop in and out will make everything better. Like a massive continuous water change.

Depending on where you are in Pataya and the quality of water during the rains; do a continuous water change through the monsoons. I would certainly pull the water from a spot where there is minimal addition of fresh water from surface run off like river or streams joining the ocean

When I had a pool in India, I built a shade over the pond high enough that you can walk under it standing straight. graded the soil such that water would flow away and Added drains just a tad bit inside the "drip line". On days with real heavy rains where the drain cant keep up the water would fill up but still be away from the pool. It was a brackish pond so I wasnt worried so much about salinity but this held up nicely.

Since the sides were open it did not lock in any additional heat, evaporation loss was in line with a normal day - but never really measured so I cant be more accurate

If high temps are a concern you could add something like a retractable shade cloth (the type used in gardens) and simulate a cloudy day :P

Make one of the outlets on your controller temparature managed such that it gets hot enough pull out the shade automatically, and retract once its ambient again.

or you could use energy efficient coated glass that lets the light in but reflects heat away.

Want to see your progress that way I can cut out mistakes in my pool ;)

I know, it would definitely be a extremely difficult job

This is unbelievable. I asked my wife to convert our 20,000 gal pool to a reef tank and guess what she said.....

Awesome job and most impressive speed of the project.

Hi, totally unrelated but I thought you might be in the know on this question.

What is this type of boat called? I know they are ubiquitous in some parts of Thailand. I have a friend that wants to build one.
