t5 light fixture

Wanting to upgrade my existing VHO lights to a 4 or 6 bulb T5 fixture. My 2 part question is what in your opinion is the best fixture for the money. Second what is a good bulb choice? Thanks billy

Hey Billy

Before I got mine I read and read on pretty much every t5 setup I could find.

The T5 thread has tons of good info,
http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1706461&page=359

So does Grimreefers homepage,
http://home.comcast.net/~stevelarsen00/site/?/home/.

The consensus seemed to be that for a fixture the ATI powermodule was the best as far as output per watt. The reflectors they use are supposed to be the best available. Price on the PM is somewhat more than others that are close but less output however. It is also already actively cooled, which is ideal for all T5's.

I know you have a canopy so if your wanting a retro then Reefgeeks, LET retro with Miro reflectors are supposed to have the best output available in a kit per watt. If you call reef geek you can supplement the Miro reflectors for the ones that ATI uses. Not sure on cost, but this will give you the highest output available for a retro. The deference inoutput is fairly minimal. The ATI however are only 2" wide vs. others are 2.5"' wide, so you could potentially fit more in a space. Also for any retro, add some fans to help cool the T5's to get your best life.

Any of the ice cap ones are not ideal because they are overdriven. With them your bulb life goes down to around 3-4 months and then par really drops.

Cheers

Dan

Current tank is 55 and when I upgrade 75/80

You'll definately want to go 6bulb over 4 bulb for one of those tanks (which are 18" wide). ATI do offer very nice T5 setups and if I were going for a full T5 set, I would get on from Reefgeek.

Is the ballast in that hood over-driving the t5 bulb?

If you are going to do SPS you probably should overdrive them..

Not sure if they are overdriven. Not sure of the ballast type. I am getting growth out of all my corals running just VHOs. so with a 6 bulb t5 fixture, I am hoping that growth will be insane.

Was thinking of this bulb selection. All ati bulbs. Blue plus. Purple plus. Blue plus. Aquablue. Blue plus. Blue plus.

so following this thread i need to upgrade my T5HO to a six bulb for my 75 instead of the 4 i currently have that i transfered over from my 55? Or can i get away with the 4 bulb. its the standard 2 10K days and 2 actinics

4 bulb is fine unless you have the more challenging SPS and they aren't up high in the tank.
Actinics have very low PAR. I'd replace one with an ATI Blue plus. Still has the pop and a w hole lot more PAR.

This is that i am thinking of what you need to go with for a 6 bulb configuration. Also i would not over drive the bulbs either. Thanks

What LED system is it? IMO i believe if they are not Crees they are either garbage or your going to need alot of them. But i think that is way to cheap on the LED side. Thanks

Careful with cheap LEDs. The efficiency is the major game here, and watts are not the right metric unless you are comparing very similar emitters.

so swapping out a blue plus for a purple plus. How will that affect the color spectrum? What are the advantages of this bulb selection?

purple plus adds red/pink/purple. 1 bulb on a 6 bulb system is always good imo. 2 depends on how much red you like vs blue or white.
