T5s and Halides FTS

No, it does not heat the water compare to MH. Maybe you can do T5 with LEDs. That is a great combination.

My plans were to use my ecoxotic LED fixtures with T5s, but just for the shimmering you would get with halides. The lighting with the LEDs would be a bonus I suppose, my lfs has T5s over there main tanks. Each tank looks different, I suppose different colored bulbs. I don't know, the decision is still in the air.

T5 does make the tank look different but the color the coral display is awesome. If you want shimmering effect go with all LED or MH. You could always have the T5 come on when you are at work and when you are at home the LED comes on.

8x 54w t5 (ati power module) i am running ati bulbs on it..

i had hqi before on my older tanks, i prefere the t5 lightning. esp when u have a lot of sps.. with hqi, you would end up with a lot of shade, where you couldent put anything, and their growt was always towards the light. With t5 you dont have all those shadows, and they grow in a nicer shape, they dont grow in one direction only, but shoot everywhere :)

Sorry to Hijack but your tank is amazing. do you have anymore info or a tank journal?

thanks

I used to use 2 400w radiums on lumen max elite blasting on my A. Abrotanoides hoping they would change from lightish brown to pink.

I have switched over to using 10 54w ATI PM for about one month now.

I just wished I had a before picture of my A. Abrotanoides before it changed colors.

I am glad I switched over to T5's.

tnx, always nice hearing posetive things! esp, after all my problems. What would you like to know?

the tank is basic: 530L (140g) 140cmx75x50cm, light is a ati powermodule 8x54w, 2x vortech 40, 2x tunze 6045, return pump of 600l, a bk 250 skimmer, schuran jetstream 1 kalk reactor, and a ghl tank computer. and a sulfor based no3 filter.

improvements in the near future, will be a kalk stirrer to keep my ph stable.

The tank have changed a bit since that picture, i am still fighting dino´s, and because of that i have started to use DinoXal medicine. Because of that, some of my corals has lost a bit of color (prob because of po4.. i had to remove my rowa)

a few more older shorts.. i dont plan on taking any pictures of how it looks now, before it regain its color :)

Amazing tank. Great aquascape and corals, however seeing the walls and wires takes away from the whole picture. Some kind of background would set the tank off

Make sure you look at t5 tanks in person. I switched from t5 to 250 radiums and am glad I did. T5 look flat and kind of lifeless to me in person. Look great in pictures thou.

Agreed. I'm shopping for a halide fixture to replace my ATI PM. Good color & growth, but it just ain't natural!

I second. With T5's you can get really cool colors, but it's not natural for the colors of the corals. I've heard quite a few people that have made the switch to t5 a few years ago are now complaning their SPS are fading, not as deep and rich in color. I personally love my 2x150w HM and 4x45w T5 combo.

Here is a pic of my 40 breeder I run Maristar fixture with 2-250 Phoenix hqi and 2 -39 watt ATI actinic. This picture is from august need to take an updated one to show the growth.

Keep you MH. I have a 30" tank and I can't keep SPS on the bottom like I used to. If you plan to do T5 use it to supplement with MH.

What is your fan setting?

My buddy has an ATI Sunpower on a 150 that is 30" tall and he has SPS all over the sand bed. He was telling me the other day that he has to start ALL SPS on his sand or he will bleach them.

If you can't keep SPS on the sand with your ATI, something might not be setup correctly. I have seen too many people keeping SPS on the sand of tall tanks.

BTW, the fans should be set to 9v. That will give you maximum PAR and bulb life.

Yes, I have the fan setting correct. I confirmed with Reef Geek. My corals does not need light accumulation since it is used to 400W MH. Over a 2 week time the corals on the bottom near the sand all went brown and polys receded. I recently moved all the coral off the bottom to mid and top and the corals has regain its color and great PE.
