Taking the Plunge

Hey folks... I'm pretty sure my yuma and mushroom on the same rock are bleaching. The blue mushroom almost underneath the rock has great color... Perhaps the lighting in my tank is too much?

This is what they looked like a month ago when they were added.

And today:

The Yuma has sprouted a ton of babies (as you can see in the picture), so it can't be THAT sick, but I worry about how bleached it looks. Should I move it to a shady spot?

Sure, give it a shadier spot and see how it does after a week. Usually they like light, but it may be getting nuked with your T5 lighting.

Yeah, I'll try moving it. I only have 4xT5 though, so of I'm nuking it through 24" of water, all those people using 6+ bulbs are in the overkill zone. :D It's encouraging that my lighting might be that powerful, though!!

I have the 6 bulbs at 54 watts (I'm not overdriving) and my ricordias were doing HORRIBLE until they moved into the shade (I actually moved them into my nanocube where there is power compact lighting. So the move may be helpful.

CONGRATS on the clowns and anemone. What species of clowns are those? Mine are flipping me the bird like TJs. But I've done my homework and my species normally don't do much with a BTA. Hind sight and all.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, Tim. Looks like they'll be getting moved tomorrow!

The clowns are ORA Ocellaris clowns, aka false perculas. I got them as little guys back in December. BTA's are not typical homes for Ocellaris, you just need to hope and pray they find the nem. If they're hosting something else in the tank, I think your odds of them taking to the nem are higher. Mine hosted the overflow for a couple days, but mostly sleep with the return nozzle at night.

My 2 clowns have hosted a few things in my tank but just dont seem to want to call the nems home. Im still waiting patiently...lol
I was looking in the tank last night after lights out with my trusty flashlight and noticed that where my 2 nems are, there is now a third...wooo hooo...another split. I couldnt tell because all 3 are right next to each other and inflated. They tend to deflate a bit at night and thats why I managed to see that one split again.

Congrats! Mine is very large, and is a clone itself... I wonder when (if) she'll decide to split?

My clam/anemone turf conflict has finally been settled... The clam jumped and the nem has expanded nearly double. I know where I want to put her next, just need to find the time to do so. She's open wide and fluffy on the sandbed but I know she won't do well there. She'll get dusted with sand by the goby and not get enough light.

eh... it all depends. I know a local reefer who keeps Croceas on the sand in his 92 corner tank (24" deep) under T5's.

Glad to hear the nem is doing well. :D

i also run 4x54 t5 slr, my tank is only 18" tall tho and i had the same problem with my bubble coral, to much light even in the shade :(

my pink anemone took out my elegance coral while I was away:(

Which is really strange because they have been right up against each other for years.

I'm sorry to hear that, Scott. Man, what a loss... :(

This is where my clam ended up. When the anemone's tentacles were barely touching its mantle lately, it wasn't retracting at all. I wonder if she was just starting to feel cramped as the nem started to cozy down and expand in the spot she decided on.

That leather is growing really quickly. The Digi's are still thriving. I can't believe that little frag that started out as a little piece the size of my pinky nail that broke off of the Digi frag is doing so well. I almost threw it out and thought, "oh, what the hell?" :D

The color settings on my camera for this picture and the previous one were off, couldn't get it quite right in PS since the funky White Balance really left some hot spots.

thanks Leysa--I think I am guilty of old tank syndrome--no pun intended here:lol:

My losses have been adding up since June:
seven heads of frogspawn
seven heads of hammer coral
2 heads of torch coral
the complete green pagoda coral
2 colonies of zoas
1 milipora
my big big blue tip acro
2 cleaner shrimp
2 coral banded shrimp
:( ;)

Thank you, Scott! I really appreciate your help with everything. That fuzz was some really painful growing pains!

I still have some little spots of Hair Algae here and there, but the evil fuzz'zilla is gone and that makes me happy. It was SO invasive with everything in the tank, no corals or other surface area of the tank was safe-- not even the sand bed.

I am thinking that it is time to add a tang, especially to munch on the algae. I've been thinking, and I might have finally decided on a yellow tang and a powder brown. I've considered a convict or Kole... but the Koles are a bit too drab for me (and I already have enough drab fish-- *coughgobycough*), and the Convicts are hard to come by locally.

I would LOVE a purple tang, but can't pocket one right now. I am thinking yellow because it will pop against the blue background well and are much easier to come by. I know they're common, but they are also still a beautiful fish and their price doesn't hurt, either. ;)

So, do you think the Yellow and Powder Brown will behave? If I add the Yellow, would the Powder Brown be able to hold his own when I add him later on? Should I just stick to a yellow tang in a 90? I don't see an upgrade in the imminent future... Definitely a few years from now, but not within the next year or two (unless I come across a large sum of money or hit the lottery  )

yellow tangs can be agressive--usually the most agressive fish is added last to your tank

However my yellow was added first, followed by the blue, then the sailfin and finally the powder blue.
The powder blue takes an occasional shot still from the yellow but none of the others.
