Tang for 3 foot cube

It was interesting to see other people's ideas but I'm going ninja mode now:strooper: <------I could've sworn I saw a ninja smilie just a second ago, darn it!

I have a good friend with a well established cube like yours, and for the last 7 years he has had a beautiful Lipstick Naso growing fat and happy. For those saying tangs don't turn in nature.... Where do you get such ideas? Sure tangs swim, and they need space to do so, but comparing a tang in a tank to a horse in a yard or a person in a box isn't helping.

I have 3 yellow tangs, 1 naso tang, 1 powder blue tang and 1 regal tang in my 48" cube.

Ive had most of my tangs for 2+ years on this tank.

The key to my success is that the tangs can swim in circles all around the tank, the rock structure is minimalistic and centered so the tangs have at least 8" between the tank walls and rock structure so they can swim in circles when they want to.

Now that is sexy

Starry blenny would be my choice.

Good choice actually I was thinking that might go good with a seahorse in a three foot cube but in all seriousness the tank that I've owned sure did enjoy swimming in a straight line they go fast and end to end all day long in my opinion name all been very active fish except for maybe the tomini

I have a kole and very small Naso in a 180, and I'd even think twice about adding them if I could do-over. They use every single inch of that tank. I don't have a lot of rock, and there is a lot of open space. Sometimes I will look in the tank and find them in some small crevice, wondering how on earth they managed to fit themselves into it.

But like everyone has said, this subject has been beaten to death. Would I personally put a tang in a 3ft cube? No.

I've had many tangs for lunch; if your tang is pacing back and forth like a cat at a zoo, then my guess is that it would be happier fried crisp with a tad of hot sauce on top! A happy tang should be happily swimming in and around the rock work throughout the display; it won't alway do that in what was a typical rock wall display.

My Z. scopus is 5 yo. From ananthus to nose I would say it is 3-3 1/2" and it won't get much bigger. It sleeps in the rocks on one side of my display; in fact, in guards the stack well. I would be happy seeing it in an open stacked 3'x3 tank.

I'm not sure who said anything about a sailfin, that was a different thread.

I read that article from Coral Magazine and it sounded like a whole lot of justification for keeping tangs in small tanks - based on the fact that it isn't convenient for the average marine aquarist to accommodate a tang. Everyone should be able to own a Dory, right? If you don't have the space or cash for a large enough tank, don't get a tang! It's that simple, I'm not sure why people don't get it. You don't see many people trying to keep a horse on their front lawn, do you? I'm not trying to criticize anyone, but I really do believe that people think a surviving fish is a "happy" fish. I agree with his point that when comparing to the ocean, a 4' tank vs a 6' tank is really a silly argument. It doesn't change the fact that I wouldn't place a tang in anything less than a 6' tank. A 6'x6' cube would be even better! I also own a parrotfish, and I believe he is even MORE demanding than several of my tangs. I am not under the impression that tangs are the only fish in the aquarium trade that have these magical tank size requirements. Be conscientious when choosing your fish and pick fish that will thrive in your tank.

The links to that article have been removed, for many reasons, none of which relate to tang stocking choices.

Let's see them tanks then? lol. I assume you have a 8ft x 8ft cube being delivered to your door atm? It's unethical to put a tang in a 125, I must say. Get'em out FAST! He might go Rogue and eat all your corals! jk lol

You need to check your attitude at the door. You can justify your stocking choices in other ways without mocking the choices of others.

In case you couldn't tell from the video, there was something wrong with the fish. It wasn't a cute trick. He was breathing heavily and darting around - obviously quite stressed, possibly from a parasitic infection. Maybe I'm the only one that isn't really appreciating the sarcasm.

No, you aren't the only one.

You just know whenever you see "Tang for 3 foot" in the subject line; things are gonna get :angryfire:
