Tang Suggestion?

I currently have one each of the following:

Yellow
Orange Fin Tomini
Desjardini Sailfin

Trying to figure out what my options are for more tangs but Live Aquaria's compatibility descriptions are confusing me. :hmm3:

Great looking system

You should be good with any of these

Achilles (my favourite)
Atlantic Blue Tang
Powder Brown Tang
Powder Blue Tang
Whitecheek
Orangeshoulder

Hippos/regals/pac blues/palettes/dorys etc. :uhoh3: They go by a whole lot of names, but a healthy specimen should make a great addition to your 180 with your current "gang". Try to avoid the tiny little guys that everybody love, just like with baby human beings, baby tangs (or fish in general) just don't have much of an immune system, leaving a lot less leeway for you. Convicts, Mimics, and lieutenant tangs are also some of the hardiest and one or two of the three would coexist well with the yellow, tomini, and desjardini. Possibly a naso, which is extremely peaceful and normally near bullet proof (for a tang), just keep in mind, he will outgrow your tank eventually (you'll have years). Good luck!

Just stay away from Ctenochaetus since you already have one, from what I've read they don't like more than one but any zebrasoma or acanthurus should be good. I like hippos what a great sized tank you have for one.

After looking at your awesome reef, I think an Achilles, Powder Blue, or Black Tang would fit in well. You may need to use an acclimation box with your already established tangs holding ground in your aquarium. Best of luck!

Thank for the suggestions!

Achilles sounds nice. Maybe a hippo. I want lots of color, but for some reason (probably nemo) i have issues with hippo tangs. haha Might have to get over that.

The last tang i added was the yellow and it was the tomini that was the bully, even though the sailfin is the largest by far. The sailfin wont take any crap, but he usually doesn't bully. I didn't think the yellow was going to make it, actually but they worked things out. I definitely need to get an acclimation box.

I have pretty much all the same tangs as yours and they get along quite well. There's a big difference in size which I believe is the key, a Tomini @ 3.5", Powder Blue @ 4.5", Olivaceus @ 6" and a Sailfin around 9". PBT's are aggressive but make awesome last addition Tangs if you can find a fat one that's eating and doesn't have Ich. I'm not really into Hippos, they can be quite neurotic and need a lot of room.

+1, hippos have unpleasant personalities when they get larger ime. I think the powder blue would be a really good fit - very colorful, great last addition.

Cool, I always liked powder blues. I'll keep that mind as a last addition. Maybe one more before him.

I asked this question a while back and from what I heard is tangs do not mix well with other tangs of similar shape, size, and color. If added at the same time the same species of tang may mix.

Every situation is different. Having a bit of experience also helps. Many people say you can only house so many Tangs in a specific tank or only this Tang with that Tang. Those are general rules but in reality they are not definitive or absolute rules. For many years I kept 7 different tangs in a 150 Gallon tank and never once had any problems. Three of those Tangs were bigger than 6". Admittedly, I was extra careful when introducing a new tang to that tank. Right now I have a 185 gallon tank setup which has 5 Yellow Tangs and 1 Purple Tang. I know... you can't do this! Yeah right, tell my Tangs that as they swim together in a school. It's all about your experience level and how you introduce fish to your system. Keep in mind both tanks I am referring to are 5 foot long...

Look at the Lavender or Dussumieri Tangs, good looking tangs. Then finish with a Powder Blue or Achilles as they will be the most aggressive. Just a thought for you as I really like both and you have a large enough tank.

FYI, ended up going with a tank raised yellow belly hippo tang. :)
He's a little stressed (ich spots) but hopefully should recover soon.
No signs of bullying so far.

Probably going to go with a purple tang next.
