Tang tank size

Two years ago before I knew better... visiting the LFS after setting up my 125 gallon tank (72x18x24), they had an adult yellow tang that was severely beat up from being attacked by damsels. My wife had to try and save it so we stupidly added the yellow tang, a younger sailfin and a juvenile yellow belly regal tang that thought he was a chromis for weeks and schooled with them. Suprisingly and luckily, they all get along very well. The yellow tang has colored up very well but has not regained all of it's fins but is the boss of the tank. The sailfin follows the yellow around and the yellow belly just hides in "his rock" until the food hits the water which he has done since he figured out he could fit in it. Needless to say it has been two years and the yellow belly is now about the same size as my flame angel. The other fish consist of 3 clowns, 2 chromis, 2 pajama cardinals, 1 bicolor blenny and an engineer goby that just won't die. I know these guys need or will need a bigger tank, the question is how much bigger? And when? I had planned on doing a 180 but am curious if that is big enough. Would I be better off finding one or two other homes? I only post this in the fish section because it's more about the well being of them than the tank size because if something happened to my wife's yellow tang, I would probably go to a much smaller tank since they are the only reason it is still up and running.

Honestly I think that the three you named will never reach their full grown potential and would be ok in a 180. The sailfin is the one that stands a chance of getting 1.5ft and looking silly in a 180g but I'm not sure it will reach that size

+1, but if you do an upgrade, go on and do the longer 240g that is popular here. It'll give you more length, and space for future fish as well...

+1 on the 240. That's what I just did and boy what a difference you actually get to watch the fish swimming instead of just hanging out. It really makes you feel sorry for all these tangs in small or smaller tanks. By the way I have a large purple tang, large powder blue, medium Sailfin, medium lemon peel mimic, and a medium Kole.

No they will be 6ft x32x 30 or something close to that. It won't be 8ft long. Perfecto makes a 300g that is the biggest non custom tank you can buy, they go on sale from time to time for 1600$

240g is a standard 8-foot tank at 96x24x24. Many tank builders make it and you should be able to order it from anyone.

If you are going for a 240g, may I suggest a 300g instead? It's only 6" wider but the 6" addition makes a lot of difference in terms of space and depth.

Who's the tank made by? I had a all glass aquarium made 265g that was 6ft long, I was unaware they made ready made tanks 8ft long. This was 15 yrs ago when I had the 265g but none the less

Most tankmakers make 8' tanks. It's a very common size. I think when most here refer to a 240, they mean an 8'X2'X2'.

I went with 96 x 26 x 22. It's actually 237 gallons but I call it my 240. I wanted to go 300 but didn't have room for that kinda depth. I like the 26 inches for depth

AFAIK there are no mass-market tanks that are 8 ft long, so you have to go custom. Longest mass-market tank is the Marineland 265 that is 7 ft long.

So I called a few LFSs yesterday and recieved some interesting responses.

#1 said they don't order over 125 gallon as that is all they can handle.

#2 said they only deal in used tanks.

#3 The Marineland dealer & major retailer (listed on their site as a dealer) Manager of the store said straight up NO, we don't order tanks. What about the ones on the shelves back there? Those are stock sizes. Gotcha.

#4 Another major retailer said we can call and get you a price but it will be an Aqueon tank so 210 is the bigest we can get and you have to be here to pick it up on THE DAY that it comes in and they won't know when that is till it arrives. Basically said if you have to have it we'll order it but we we don't want to. Well that could prove hard to fit into my work schedule and it's not exactly easy to line up enough people to move a tank that size to begin with and to do it on a few hours notice?

One more LFS to call but being a one man operation without a loading dock I am resistant to pin such a large tank on him.

The last is over an hour away and overpriced on EVERYTHING in their store.

I looked into Glasscages but I haven't heard many positive reviews on them. Has that changed?

Glassgages built me a 8x2x2 in acrylic and I have to say they did a nice job. I just finished setting it up and I couldn't be happier.

Also their delivery to your city saves big money on freight.

There are dozens of people on here with 240s. SD Guy just recently set one up. I thought most were 8x2x2. You just need people with these tanks to weigh in. Can you change the title of this thread to something like "Which 240 gal tank and where should I buy it?"

Just out of curiosity, do the LFS you mentioned above (1-4) complain about losing business to online vendors?

Its not a 240 but it may as well be lol. I have the 200 gallon made by VISIO and what a awesome tank with the black silicone. it is 7 foot long 84x24x24 I wanted the 240 that was 8 feet long but that last foot would not work out for me, $727.00 shipped from texas to las vegas. You can also check into scaquariums Been hearing a lot of good things about there tanks. There prices include shipping to you.

I had a custom 180 built 8 feet by 24" tall by 18" front to back. I got the length for a naso tang, although I don't have one yet. Having a narrower tank save on the total quantity of water, but still gives the fish a lot of swimming room. It's a good compromise, in my opinion.

Had it made locally in Sacramento, CA

8 x 2 x 2 has been a standard size for a 240g since I've been in the hobby. Glass or acrylic. Now weather or not any manufacturer mass produces large sized tanks like that is another question. But certainly any tank manufacturer that does build them will not call this a "custom" size.
