Tang tank sizing

I've read the Tang Tank size faq.

Planning on a 180ish g 60X30X24 tank. Even though its a 5 foot tank, given that it is 30" deep vs the standard 24", can I get Tangs recommended for a 6ft tank?

Its my understanding that the height is fairly meaningless when chosing a tang for your tank. Its all about the length because they like to race back and forth and not up and down.

It really is the length that matters. If you take off length and add in more front to back depth, they can't swim as far without having to stop or turn. The 6ft recommendation is because the fish should have that distance or more to swim in a straight line to keep them happy.

Yup read it, as I said in my post.

My question is whether a deeper tank, front to back affects the recommendations.

Yes it does. Longer is typically better for tangs, width or depth as your referring to it is less important but still relevant. You should tell us the tangs you want to get and we can better assist you. Right off the bat I can tell you no Nasos or Acanthurus tangs unless they are a powder.

Think your tank size is pushing it with a Achilles in a tank that size. Also not sure what flow you're planning on having in the tank but whatever it is you will need more for a AT

A long time ago I tried a powder brown in a L 150cm x D 80cm x H 60cm (59" x 31" x 24") peninsula tank and that fish was constantly stressed out. After I gave it to a friend with a 1500 liter (400 gal) tank (had a 2m/6.5ft front) the fish did fine.

Based on that I would say a powder brown likely won't be happy in your tank.

imo, yes!!! i would chose from: yellow, purple, chevron, mimic, and a like. i would also disagree with height and depth being less important than lenght. my tangs never swim in a straight line, they meander around the rocks, go up and down, back and forth. the only time i see tangs go in a straight line is when they're stressed, and i have seen that in 20 foot tanks.

A little thoughtfulness when it comes to aquascaping will make a difference here as well. For example, if you build your LR structure toward the center of the tank, your active swimmers will be able to make a circuit around the rock. Of the fish that you listed (powder brown, Achilles, purple), I would say that the purple would be the best fit for a carefully aquascaped 5' tank.

Dmorty you are much more of an expert than I am on this topic so this question is more for my own understanding. Could he get away with the following Acanthurus (they are all 8-9" max according to LA):

Atlantic Blue
Lavendar
Mimic
Convict
White Cheek

The mimic, convict and whitecheek yes, the other two I would avoid. Those weren't the Acanthurus that came to mind. I was thinking orange shoulder, dussi, fowleri, ect that really do achieve 10"+ in home aquariums

Thinking of a powder brown, Achilles and a purple.

I'd drop an Achilles and go with a Powder brown maybe? It could just be my experience, but Browns are wayyyy more laid back than Achilles. My AT used every bit of my 8' 240 and he was 4.5". They are extremely active and....high strung? Fish. Would swim in the current of both my MP60 and ( when I switched) my gyre150 at full bore like it was nothing. Plus they are much more finicky when it comes to ich and the like.

Just my 2¢....
