tangs & butterflies

I'm having the same concerns myself.

Will be adding a 2" CBB to our tank with 4 established tangs. 5" Black, 3.5" Yellow, 5" YB Blue Tang (The Devil) and a 3" Chevron.

The CBB really only eats brine shrimp in QT, but he is aggressive when brine is in the tank. There are 5 2.5" Huchtii Anthias in quarantine with him, and he'll get in front of them for brine.

The YB Blue really scares me though... he is currently beating up our terminal Lineatus. Even beat up our Crosshatch Trigger Pair when they first went in the tank...

Guess we'll see...

I'm starting to get the feeling that the higher the fish population, the less aggression I see.

When I basically just had 6 tangs in the tang with a few cardinals, the aggression was off the charts. Every time we add more fish, the aggression seems to drop.

I would suggest first trying it with a good sized acclimation box. You see how mine went without a box. My cbb is actually about 3.5 to 4 inches. Tangs were only slightly larger maybe 6" tops.

I still have my cbb in the box. I'm using a 2g water jug I made into an acclimation box. I just cut the sides and zip tied some egg crate to it. It has a large screw on type lid to place the fish in/out. It's large enough where the cbb has plenty of room to swim and he eats very well. He comes right to the end of my turkey baster to eat the black worms now. The tangs stopped harassing him after the first day that he spent in the box. I'm going to try letting my cbb out tomorrow morning. I'm actually just going to take off the lid, and let him come out on his own. I'll leave it in there so he can retreat back into it if he wants but I doubt that would happen.

So I opened his container but left it in there so the copperband could come out on his own/ go back in if he wanted. The tangs have him a hard time soon as he came out but nothing like before aside from the pbt. The pbt wasn't even as bad as before but still enough to make the cbb cower in the corner.

The pbt actually chase some food right into the acclimation box while I was standing right there so he is currently in time out completely by accident. Lol

With him in time out it seems like the next tang in line for the king spot takes over to harass the butterfly. I'm seriously debating on relocating some tangs and starting my tang quarantining back up with some smaller guys. I'm going to give it a few days and see what happens first. At least this time it hasn't been bad enough to the point of torn fins or anything but it sucks to see the cbb cowering in the corner constantly.

Not much, really. The powder blue is still in the trap. The copperband is a bit more comfortable now though, swimming amongst the other tangs at feeding time only. If he strays too far from the top half of the tank any other time, the tangs push him back, but not too violent. Still no nipped fins. Still has left all coral alone. I found that when the moonlights are on, the tangs go to bed and the copperband goes on the hunt in the front part of the tank. He is very fun to watch during those couple hours prior to complete lights out. Which led to this...

I have decided to sell off all my tangs, and get a couple juvi's after the copperband is well established. I also couldn't help but grab a longnose, so I have that in QT now, which kind of helped influence my decision with the tangs.

I had a pyramid butterfly living nicely with my desjardini, blue tang, yellow tang, and couple rabbitfish for two months then it just jumped one night for not reason. Other than that it was happy and eats like a pig and the Tang leaves it alone no problem. I might get another one "after" I add net on the top.
