i just purchased my first tang (yellow) he was kinda skinny when i got him but has been eating like a pig i have been feeding him seaweed selects and the whole tank has been getting frozen saltwter multipack most of which has high veggie content. Just wondering if it is normal for tangs poop to do this, i know with herbivore's in freshwater stringy poop = bad jsut wondering im sure you guys will know

i believe that may be a sign of an intestinal prarasite?

I have to agree..... All my tangs "blast" their poop out... what's funny though is that whenever the LM Blennie poops, the tangs swim by quickly to eat it.... Kinda reminds me of dogs loving to eat cat poo.....

you may want to put him in a QT and treat him for the parasites. i dont know how to treat this, but check the fish disease forum...or someone else on here probably knows.

You may want to start adding galic extreme to your food .... I've always used it and I've never seen any signs of distress with my fish... I also feed them nori everyday... While adding garlic to fishs diet is not proven to prevent marine ich, it has been proven to ward off intestinal parasites....and it appears to help in their overall health and boosts the immune systems.. it also helps get finicky eaters to start eating quicker...

well he is no finicky eater by any means. he seems very healthy overall and he begs for food and picks at rocks all day long. I have been overfeeding him a bit since i got him and he was fairly skinny, could overfeeding cause this maybe?

there was just a thread about how the garlic supplements are now thought to be bad. Didn't read the whole thing, so i don't know what the facts are.

I have a Yellow Tang with the same problem, real skinny. When I put the Seaweed Selects in the tank he just nips at it but barely really eats any. He will take the frozen MYSIS though. The LFS also said it may be an internal parasite. They said to give him Formula two and Seaweed Selects for a couple of weeks and if that does'nt help he may need medication..The problem with the Formula Two is that my Cleaner Shrimp always steals it :(

well my tang will divour the seqweed selects in no time and he isnt skinny now but he was when i got him 4 days ago, he is about 6" long so i have really been over feeding him lately but he seems to love it. i was adding some top off water and he was trying to eat the bubbles. seems real active (hungry).

Seachem AquaZole (metronidazole) will treat internal parasites. MSince your YT is eating, just mix the powder with food, and feed the YT.

Do not treat your fish with aquaZole while it's in the reef.... this stuff is "NOT" I repeat "NOT" reef safe.... It cost me over $600 in livestock to find this out....

Eagle, I've been feeding my fish with garlic extreme for almost a year now and I have never had any issues with it.... I'm not sure about this thread you're refering to but I tend to disbelieve that garlic is harmful... My reference about garlic helping the fish's ability to ward off internal parasites comes from a scientific study that was done to try and prove/disprove the claims that garlic helped in curring fish of ich infestation....

The artical can be found at the Advanced Aquarium On-Line Magazines website.... Garlic usage was not found to be a definitive ich cure but was found to be very good at curing fish of internal parasites.... Nori can be found at any oriental market ( it's just dried sheets of seaweed after all ) used in making sushi...

Is it ok if some of the other fish which are'nt sick eat some of the treated food?

My yellow tang poops the same, I thought maybe it was just from eating chaeto in the display..... I hope he's not sick! He's been doing it for the last few months which is when I added the chaeto.

No problem, you can treat healthy fish with metronidazole for prevention.

You can use metronidazole if you target feed and mix it with food, better still mix it with Seachem focus, which will bind the medication together with food. And very little should get into the water. Of course, it would be even better if you can get the YT into a QT.
