No problem, you can treat healthy fish with metronidazole for prevention.

You can use metronidazole if you target feed and mix it with food, better still mix it with Seachem focus, which will bind the medication together with food. And very little should get into the water. Of course, it would be even better if you can get the YT into a QT.

Go right ahead and do that .... that's how I did it and that's how I lost most of my corals.. treat the food, food goes into the tank med goes into the tank .... But hey, It could have just been a coincidence... Maybe something else killed off most of my corals and polyps about the same time I treated the tank with this med...

I learned and it took about 4 months before I could add anything to the tank ... But my fish where healthy all but the coral beauty that I still lost.... Personally I'll never treat a reef tank with anything....ever...

Sorry if I'm being too pushy about this but my trouble started by listening to a fella with supposed many years of reef experience at a local fish store... $12 for this wounderful "reef safe" med... wow... I treat tank kill all or most of my corals amd hey ... when I come back?? He's no longer employed there...

That's one of the problems, recognizing it: internal parasites caused white stringy poop look exactly like that.

Here's a picture of the Tang:

Mikro:

Your YT looks skinny too.

I would start the treatment ASAP before the YT goes off any food, after that point, it will all be too late.

Do you have a QT ready?

fishman805: I strongly recommend that using any med in QT too.

Thank you dchao..... I almost got out of reef keeping because of that....

Mikro..... I truely wish you the best of luck at beating this "bug" ..

so do you guys thing this could be chaeto that he is eating im pretty sure it is actually. because one of his turds broke off and was floating around and im pretty sure it was just chaeto that was deprived of light for a few days and was partialy digested.

Stringy poop can be a sign of intestinal parasites or simply diarrhea.

If its diarrhea then it should eventually pass on its own.
Intestinal parasites tend to be either nematode or protozoan infections. Nematode infections are best treated with Piperazine while protozoan infections are best treated with Metronidazole.

To my knowledge there is no method that a std aquarist can determine whether his fish has a nematode or protozoan problem and most aquarist will start with one treatment and move to the next if the first treatment is ineffective.

Heres a link that discusses this issue .. might help.

http://www.petsforum.com/personal/trevor-jones/internalinfections.html

This problem is similar to deworming dogs/cats and uses the same type medications ... best done in a QT environment.

Hope this helps.

IMO, if the stringy poop is hanging off the fish for a long time (5-10 min), then it's internal parasites. If the fish have eaten too much vegetation and had a diarrhea, the poop will normally blast out like fireworks. But the best indicator is the fish itself, if the fish is skinny, it's likely it has internal parasites.

I wouldn't qt him. I would give him a nice portion of seaweed selects (the 24 hour stuff, not the 6 hour stuff) everyday for a couple of weeks. He will get healthy and his body will fight it on his own. From my past experience QTing is sometimes harder on the fish than the problem. Give it a couple of weeks and if he really starts to look bad then I would qt him. Remember he eats seaweed for about 14 hours a day everyday on the reef in his natural habitat so plenty of the greens should make him a happy feeshie!

well i have been feeding the 24hr seaweed selects everyday since i got him he seems to be a very happy fishy allready, really i am just concerned about him is all but he seems great exept for stringy poop

You seem to be doing a good job so I wouldn't worry too much. He will be fine. Those guys are pretty tough little buggers for being so delicate looking.
