Tank-O-death

Wow!! 350/m in electricity to run that baby!! If you could cut that in half thats a huge savings over the course of time. The energy efficient pumps could pay for themselves.

Know what you mean about waiting for the economy to show a bit more of what it's going to do, I went from a "piddly" 100g to a 180g when the 100 cracked and a friend was kind enough to give me a loaner... well the loaner gave me some large ideas... however I want to see if it'd be feasible, strangely enough the thing I'm worried most about is water as "mandatory water rationing" tends to heat up in this area as the "snow pack" isn't as wet as it should be.

I grew up in the Bay Area and came to the conclusion that a lot of that water rationing stuff was just propaganda. I'll never forget the story about a friend of mine in Marin who's father purchased a water truck to bring water in from another area for his landscaping. He had serious cash sunk into fabulous grounds around his home and did not want to let it all die off.

So he brought in truckloads of water at great cost, his neighbor reported him, and he was fined and had to share the water with his neighbors. That kind of stuff just makes me sick. But I did enjoy the shower-with-a-friend 70's!

Hey Steve, nice to "see" you! I am with you on designing for minimal piping and lowering the leak risk, but I still have not found a better way than a Sequence for sump-to-tank exchange. Do you have any new thoughts on this?

There will be no external pumps on my next systems.....I'm done with those regardless of efficency. I'm leaning towards the in sump Red Dragon II variable pumps for the very short sump to tank returns. Past that, all internal circulation will probably use several powerheads like the new Tunze 6305's that are about to come out (8000gph). I will mount them in wet boxes in the overflow to hide them.....or perhaps waveboxes.....but, whatever I use, it will be completely hidden, but accessible. The coldwater tank will be the guinea pig for Tunzes or Red Dagon pumps.

True....but if $350/month is a burden, then I have no business installing a large tank.

Interesting. Are the RD pumps pressure rated?

My design work leads me in the direction of over the top, to the bottom, and through eductors to keep the bottom completely clean as well as giving the return flow as complete a run through the tank as possible.

It sounds like you might have to use bulkheads to keep the return run short?

Well I would give two poops about "rationing" if "this area" didn't continuously keep building more homes, and more homes, and more homes... I mean its not like it rains/snows harder because there are more people that need water here.

But yeah, propaganda or not, they'll still charge you up the keister for using more water... or more to the point, if you don't cut back a certain percentage which doubly sucks because if you were someone who conserved everywhere you could, you still have to cut back.

But I digress, didn't mean to go off topic :D

Yes, I will need return bulkheads....but, only in the overflow which will not allow a complete tank drainage if a bulkhead failure occurs.

I plan on only a few feet of head pressure anyway. The variable output is really attractive to me.....but....alas....not the $2000 per pump price tag.

seems very spendy for a modded Laguna, but the results may be worth it. My biggest concern regarding any submerged pump is the heat they produce. I am going to ask a couple of questions over there.

My feeling was that a VFD pressure rated Sequence would be the way to go in terms of getting variable speed and good power, but that would also cost quite a bit.

I'm far more concerned about NOT dealing with leaky pump seals than a little added heat that my chillers can readily handle......and of course reliability.

did you have a lot of that happen with your previous setup? I know you pushed the envelope with the number of pumps you were running and that usually increases the probability of breakdown, but I have never had an issue with mine. Was it an on-going problem?

Yes...I am looking at the new 6305's. Yesterday, I got my old coldwater system back from the guy who I sold it to. I have it temporarily set up in my garage to grow out until I set up a much larger cold tank (perhaps this summer). The new coldwater tank will be the limit of my reefing invovlment for the forseeable future.....unless this economy turns around soon (which it won't until at least 2011).

hmmm...I have been meaning to get in touch to see if you are ready to take back the Tyree Sunset rock!
