Tank Of The Month - December 2008

outstanding tank, and outstanding tank room, interesting that 6 mils of vodka is used daily as well, just glorious, well done

Do you think the vodka really helps your tank? Have you ever stopped the vodka for a week or two to see what happens, and if so what are the resluts

Congratulations on a beautiful TOTM. I particularly enjoyed the level of ingenuity that you have use to keep your tank looking so beautiful, I have learn a few things from seeing the pictures that I will try to apply some of this methods in my tank......Thank you!

Paul, I kind of remembered when I saw your tank couple years ago.
You did inspire me to have this fish tank room.
So far I can't fulfill my dream yet but I will have it sooner or later.
Thank you so much.
Congratulation for TOTM. You are truly more than deserved!

It was the TOTMs here on Reef Central that inspired and motivated me to go ahead with my almost lifelong dream to build this tank, so it means so much when someone says my tank is an inspiration to them. Thanks so much everyone. Now I'll answer some of the questions.....

Would you happen to have any pictures of the construction side of it?
Sadly no, I didn't do a build thread or take pics of the construction. I really regret it. The reason is that I was living through a remodel of my home at the same time and it was an unbelievable mess. There were so many details that needed my attention and so many problems with contracters etc. that I just didn't have the time. I was stressed.

out of curiousity, how long does it take you to water all those plants????

LOL, it does take me a while to water them, but it's a chore I enjoy. I have always grown plants, and I like to find unusual ones to keep.

Do you still have that basket star? If so, that's DOPE. What are/did you feed it?

I still have it and it's doing well. It doesn't move much and it stays perched on the overflow. I feed him mysis, mostly at night. He opens up though whenever I put any type of food in the tank.

Coincidently ,I have just recently stopped the vodka to see what would happen. I started vodka dosing to try and deal with the nutrient issues I was having when I tried to keep some non-photosynthetic corals. I had some scleros, a dendro, and the gorgonian you can see in the pics. Well, the corals did fine, but I could not control the rising phosphate and nitrate levels. I had to cut back on the food. Now I have the denitrator, so I stopped the vodka to see what would happen. I only thing I noticed was a decline in the number of pods in my sump. I think carbon dosing is a very useful tool, and that as time passes we will get better info and experience on how to use it.

Hi Paul, first congratulations, and I have a question, what is that funnel vent for?, I see them in both your skimmer and ozone reactor skimmer.

Thank you.

The air comming out of a skimmer is at 100% humidity. The bubblekings have a huge air output. I vent all that moist air out of the basement window and out of the house. The funnels fit over the top of the skimmer and catch all the air, and tubing attached to the funnel runs over to the window. There is a pic of the basement window with all the tubing for the incoming and outgoing air. It works really well to help keep humidity down.

One of the things I am most impressed with (besides the obviously amazing qualities) is the fact that it is a mixed reef which in itself is a challenge. The coral look great next to one another. I have some mushrooms next to my sps and it is a constant battle. Everything in there looks tremendous - again, amazing!

I tried to anticipate this problem by creating "zones" where corals of a certain type are kept. The center of the tank, where the overflow is, has a lower light level. I put alot of the mushrooms and softies there along with deepwater sps. I find the orange digi will do well no matter where I put it. The mushrooms will burn it though if it grows too close.

Tank of the month

Tank of the month

UUUUUUHG, I wanna see that tank in person. I just realized my tank aint ****. Your tank, how you got it set up, displayed is AMAZING. Hats off to ya. Thats going to be a hard one to beat. AMAZING. If you ever show this to any one in person will you put me on the visitor list.

I have enjoyed reading about/looking at your tank over the last couple of years. It was the inspiration for the design of my new tank (coming very soon) that will also be viewable from 4 sides, and have center overflows(2). I am amazed at how well everything comes together with the great diversity of the tank inhabitants.
It is truly breathtaking!!

Cool! The added benifit of viewing all four sides is the extra space. It's like having 2 tanks for the price of one. Also, you can have a completely different population of animals and/or aquascape.

Sweetsorren, let me know if your ever in Massachussetts:)

Here they are, a pair of blujaws.
