Tank Of The Month - December 2008

Paul, we fixed that typo when you reported it. It just takes a little time to get the live page updated. :)

Like I said to Hop, you guys are amazing. Maybe you should think of illustrating what it takes to bring a TOTM to Reef Central. I think it would make a good article for the magazine.

It would just be pictures of me sitting at my computer with multiple cups of coffee, two monitors, and a bit of cursing on my part. And do that across five days in a row, and you have a pretty good idea what goes on to make the issue each month. After that, it is released, and I get a few notifications of needed corrections.

Maybe I should write a letter from the editor.

EDIT: And a lot of m&m's are consumed, btw.

Lol. I'm like an English teacher until it comes to my typos;-) Anyway, wow!, it's almost two feet across. That is amazing. I think that is the largest gigantea I've ever seen. Congratulations on great success with such a difficult species.

I need an English teacher, it seems. :) Thanks to your conversation about this, I just saw I had more to fix than that spurious 'n' at the end. Fixed again, and the page will be repopulated tomorrow.

why do you add vodka to your tank?

This question keeps popping up. There are some excellent threads here on Reef Central about carbon dosing (vodka in this case) that can explain it in greater detail. In my case, I was feeding large amounts of food to keep non-photosynthetic corals. I used the vodka to help keep nutrient levels down. Essentially, your feeding bacteria in your tank a carbon source that promotes their growth. As they reproduce, they consume the excess nitrate and phosphate in you tank.

Here's a good article on the topic:

Western_reefer, Aquabucket, Mucho reef, Gary Majchrzak and AquamanE, thank you all! I can't decide whether to stick to generalized thank- you's or address everyone individually, so I guess I'll do a little of both. Much appreciated everyone!
