Tank of the Month - November 2002

Thanks everybody!!! I love that "softie sway" too...

I set up the tank to be an SPS tank, but when it came time to start selling my corals, I just couldn't do it. I've had most of the coral in the tank for 5+ years. I have a hard time slicing them up to propagate them...:D

I'm debating on setting up an "SPS only" tank that will run off of the same system.

Regards,

Ryan

WOW!!!!

Finally, a softie mix reef that is TOTM!!!! I seriously could not believe my eyes when I went to R/C and saw a beautiful pic of some soft corals and not the usual (sometimes, at least now that I'm so used to them, boring SPS tanks) SPS tanks that are so often the TOTM

But seriously.....

Can you elaborate alittle more on the baffle system you are using in the 'fuge? looks like I may want to imploy a similar design to yours but still can't figure out exactly for sure what you did:o :)

SaltwaterSensei,

Thanks...

The baffle is very simple. The PVC pipe comes thru the top of the box and forms a "U" at the bottom. I drilled 3- 2" holes at the bottom of the right side of the box. The water and bubbles are sent to the top of the box where the bubbles pop. The water leaves the box via the holes on the side. I got the idea from my downdraft skimmers

What a beatiful tank. Every extreme tank I see...the person has a huge room or basement with huge sumps and refugiums. I am starting to wonder if my setup can ever look like that. I have a 75 gallon sump running about 40 gallons of water and a small 15 gallon refugium. My tank is a 180g by the way. I love your setup but...I live in florida and I have no basement and no extra space for something like this. I hope I'm not wasting my time and money.

Although I think all of the TOTM's are great and obviously the work of some very dedicated and knowledgable hobbists, this tanks is absolutely the nicest tank I have seen anywhere. The mix of softies and stonies really sets it apart. (Sorta like using actinicsto supliment). I find it much more appealling than a strictly stony tank. Excellent tank! Its become my inspiration!

Thanks for the compliments...:D

Tonytooth,
I don't think you're wasting your time or money. There are tons of reefers that keep all of their equipment under their stand and are very successful.

Go Ryan! Go Ryan! :D Sweeeeet! I'll bet that looks great all swaying in the breeze, especially that monster spaghetti Sinularia.

And, really, who is to say that softies aren't as spectacular as a tank just full of Acros. I think they are, so here's to something extra special this time around. (clink goes the Sam Adams bottles)

I heard they are calling Norm Abrams Ryan Baker now. :D

Wanna swap some leather frags? I have some green stuff I don't see in your tank there.....:D

....OK, I'm going back to look/drool at the pics some more.....

I am so glad I checked this before the month ran out. I actually kind of burned out on checking out the TOTM's and I would have really been bummed if I missed yours. WHEW!!!!

Thanks for the great compliments... :D

Frick,

I'd love to swap some leathers... I've been trying to hook up with ShawnZ and head out your way to go to the Salty Critter. Maybe we could hook up then...

Thanks,

Ryan

Cool

Glad to see I'm not the only one that's partial to softies. I was starting to feel very lonely... :D

Thanks again everybody... I'll keep you posted as I'm getting ready to replace my live rock and add a thin layer of sand for asthetic reasons...

Skipper's alarm clock didn't go off... He was sleeping instead of getting the new tank of the month posted...:D :D

Wow, what an amazing setup. I think you've convinced me to drill through the floor and use the basement for the sump/refugium. All my aqaurium stuff is already right below the tank anyway. Its been very difficult and messy to fit everything in the stand comfortably. Now to convince the wife....

Anyway, I really like your stand and canopy design and I like to get more details about the construction and how you fastened everything together, and I also have some specific questions:

Why did you leave the back of the stand open? I'm thinking I could just use a solid piece of plywood instead.

What did you use to finish the inside of the canopy and stand?

Were you able to find wide sold pieces of Jatoba for the sides(and doors) of the stand, or are they made from narrower pieces biscuit joined together? Again, I'm thinking about plywood due to the width. And my joining skills are probably not up to your level. I've seen jatoba around, but I don't remember what widths are commonly available. I'm planning to use cherry, and hardwood supplier here has cherry up to 18" widths. But I haven't looked that hard yet.

-Thanks!
