TDB's 320 SPS Tank

Dude, gorgeous tank. The color is just insane.

Would you mind posting some details of the tank Chemistry? What salt do you use etc ...

Thanks a lot in advance. I need to figure out what I am doing wrong :)

Your tank and photos are spectacular Tom! Congratulations on creating and maintaining such a beautiful system.

Steve (GLA) is in the process of building an 8X30 for me and I'm trying to get a handle on managing the evaporation. I'm going open-top, so I'm my evap will likely be more. Has 8 GPD evaporation caused any difficulties or required air handling equipment?

Hey Tom thanks and congrats. I responded to your build thread with some design ideas. Feel free to bounce any questions. I am looking forward to the build. Leveraging the evaporation will really help keep parameters up with kalk via top off. I also run open top and have 4 8" fans blowing on the water. I have noticed a few moisture spots on the ceiling in spring and fall but nothing to create an issue. It works out well in the winter and I cut my whole house humidifier in half. If I could do it over again I would have put a vent and duct work and a two way fan going outside for venting as my the tank is on an outside wall. This will help keep PH up and the heat from the lights out. I know Russ did this with is 420 and it is a wise design decision. My PH stays +-8 but would be much higher with venting.

I'm in Sterling Heights, Do you ever frag any SPS out? I would be interested if so.

Yes I have a ton of stuff. I had a guy come over and get some nice colony sized pieces. Ill PM with my number and you can come out when you get a chance.

Thanks

Sure

CA 450 - 480
ALK 9-10
phos .01
Nitrates 1 - .2
MG 1350

I have changed philosophy from ULNS to LNS. Running nutrients higher allows you to raise your alk and achieve faster growth. Plus the corals are breath taking. Sure some corals look better with ULNS but the majority look stunning in higher nutrients. The key is increasing nitrates without cranking up phosphates with overfeeding fish. I have moved to using only low phosphate foods such as pellets and rinsing everything else and do Water changes monthly 20%. Bringing up nitrates with a carbon source(Biopellets) will significantly reduce or even eliminate your phosphates. The strategy has worked out will and allowed me to get out of using GFO. I have a DIY nutrient solution that adds all essential AA's, trace elements and will even bring up nitrates. I test every week and adjust. Once I nail down the amount needed I will put it on a dosing pump Basically the biopellets work on striping it and the solution replenishes input/output.

The current salt is neomarine because of its consistent seawater alk levels. With running Kalk, CaRX and 2 part I am thinking of going back to IO or something cost efficient like salinity now that seawater alk is not a factor for me. I have had good results with neomarine but would not contribute it to the salt usage.

I am droolingg over your tank, the colors are .... to good for words. Your strategy seems simple and is obviously working splendidly. What kind of lighting schedule do you have the mh and led's on , do you run the mh less or both the same amount?

I run the MH from 12 to 6PM
LED whites milticolor 10% from 11 to 7PM
Led Blues 50% from 10AM to 10PM

The first and last hour for the LEDS ramp up and down.
