Tell me about your skimmers CDMAS

I've got a Lifereef skimmer.

I guess I like it. I've nothing really to compare it to.

I don't like having to adjust the outflow slightly every few days.

Nice reef project you got there. My nano runs with CPR's Bak Pak and my current 90 gallons under construction will run with a new recirculating Octopus 150.

I think you will do well with Tunze's skimmers.

Barr Aquatics SK1220 beckett skimmer run off a GEN-X PCX-55HP pump pushing 40+ SCFH.

A bit dirtier then when this pic was taken, but she's still cranking... :smokin:
(I like to post this pic any opportunity I get :D)

Nother very satisfied Barr Skimmer owner here. I'd buy exactly the same one again.

I think mine is the next size up from TA's.

Thanks every one I forgot to include.
How often do your skimmers need to be cleaned in order to keep it working reasonably well.
Details about the cleaning (riser tube, collection cup or a complete cleaning.
How difficult is it to dial in your skimmer
Does adding supplements/food ect. Make the skimmer go nuts.
Have your skimmers over flowed leaked ect.
Thanks in advance

Lifereef

Clean collection cup every two weeks by popping it right off

Slight adjustments as the 'time to clean' approaches

Oyster eggs and epoxy putty make mine go nuts

Never overflowed

"How often do your skimmers need to be cleaned in order to keep it working reasonably well."
ALL skimmers need routine cleaning to maintain efficient skimming. I'd say at least once/week. Any build-up will quickily reduce the ability of foam to rise. Slight adjustments are needed at this point to keep it skimming.

"Details about the cleaning (riser tube, collection cup or a complete cleaning."
Barr skimmers (btw, although they can be run internal, prefered method is external) are designed to easly disassemble...just a twist of the neck and the riser/collection cup comes off...other parts are finger tightened nylon bolts. Rinse well. Collection cup drains to remote collection.

"How difficult is it to dial in your skimmer"
Not at all..."dial-in" is Instant.
Three adjustments: Air low, water flow, water level. I maintain about 40 SCFH with a john guest fitting while monitoring the air flow meter; leave my pump maxed out; adjust level in the main chamber with a ball valve on the outflow to about 1-2" below the riser. Turn it on and within minutes, you can get wet or dry foam. Yes...it IS instant!

"Does adding supplements/food ect. Make the skimmer go nuts."
I find that adding food (at least what I feed), putting my hands in the tank, etc... has the opposite affect...breaks down the foam head. No worries, within 30'-60' she's foaming again. Some chemicals I've added have caused it to "go nuts".

"Have your skimmers over flowed leaked ect."
Beckett skimmers are masters of the overflow! :D
Collection needs to be equiped with an auto-shut off (actually, the shut off simply puts back-preasure on the air input decreasing air flow and shutting down the head).

Same answers as TA, although if I've had any overflows it was a long time ago and I've forgotten about it. The only thing that makes the skimmer 'go nuts' is 2-part epoxy.

Having never used an external skimmer I have a couple Q's
Being that there are no stupid Q's LOL

Whats SCFH stand for? What supplies the air a venturi? Or an air pump? You maintain the SCFH by throttling the air flow? Using a john guest fitting which is what? A ball valve?

I run an asm G3 with no mods fills the collection cup every 5-7 days on a 200 GAL system...

It has ben running for 4 months, set it and forget it. I have only had to clean the cup.

SCFH Cubic Feet per Hour at Standard Conditions

Sorry...

SCFH = Standard Cubic Feet per Hour

Beckett is a type of venturi...pressure gradient generated by the water flow pulls air into the skimmer...ALOT of air!

Because it pulls in alot of air, you can dial it back as you would a water pump...with a valve (John Guest is a brand/type of fitting). The air flow meter helps me diagnose any problems and allows me to 'set' the amount of air being pulled in..very consistent.

Great Reply!
The reason I was going to buy the tunze is mainly due to low maintenance. The second is it is quiet. The reason for I need a low maintenance skimmer is that I travel often. With this new info I will have to look again at skimmers. I like the bubble king but not at that price.

I also run a Deltec MCE600. I have had a couple other skimmers to compare it to (cheaper ones) and I have to say it's the best I've used yet.

I clean the collection cup every 3-4 days....thick black nog. I disassemble the enire skimmer every 3- 4 months and clean the pump (very easy to breakdown).

As far as setting goe, set it and forget it. When you buy the better quality skimmers, there is less messing around to get them right. Set your airflow and your producing foam in no time......

Also, the Delec is almost silent.......

Opps! Becketts can be very noisy...between the pump required to run them (need a good szed pump to run the beckett) and the sound of air being drawn in (sounds like a huricane!), they can be very noisy!

I love my skimmer, but its definately NOT for everyone.

btw, mine is in a remote location so I don't have to listen to it...much!

good luck

On my Lifereef skimmer I only have one adjustment, the water output flowrate. And the noise level is only from the pump I choose to hook to it (Mag 9.5). The water level stays constant becuase the skimmer sits in a sump with an auto-top-off mechanism.

What's an airflow adjustment do for you?

The beckett can actually pull in too much air causing the bubble size to be too large, thereby reducing skimming efficiency. Dialing it back a bit helps reduce bubble size.

I really love the airflow meter. Great little tool.

The "sweet spot" :D
