the best seahorse aquascapes

What would you like to know?

The tank itself was a 2ft cube but 3ft high. It was connected to several other tanks which took care of a lot of the filtration etc. It also meant that there was water flowing though it from the main system and therefore i only had one small powerhead in there which was a koralia 1400. They loved the flow and if i was doing it again i would add slightly more.

how did you position the powerhead?
from down or up?

You should be able to see the powerhead on the right around half way up. It was directed towards the surface as i used a feeding bowl for the horses and if it was too low then the food would be washed out.

you never had problems with the seahorses and this powerhead?

No they loved it. The female used to deliberately swim underneath it and surf the flow. She'd then go back and do it again and again. Its is also good because they don't have a particularly strong suck but are guarded really really well and there were no issues or worries about them getting caught on it. I think people seem to underestimate how much flow seahorses like. This was quite gentle but i have friends who have had huge success with much more flow. It seemed that 2-3x turnover was the norm but anything around 10 or slightly over is normal and excepted now. I'd personally experiment.

Mine used to wrap around the guard on the powerhead output and flail about like a streamer tied to an air conditioning vent.

All Very nice tanks everyone! im considering a seahorse tank for my daughter but i dont kno what other fish behave if any, what corals and plants are good for them how much water flow and lighting they need...can anyone help me?

It is best to do seahorse species only tanks for best chances of success.
You can get some beginning information by reading the links at the bottom of the page "My Thoughts on Seahorse Keeping" written by experienced keepers and a piece also by Dan Underwood of seahorsesource.com.
There is a link there as well to tankmates that can give you an idea on what else to put in if you want to try.
Basically, corals that don't sting and can take the lower temperature (68°-74°)
can be added, and if you want to take a chance with some fish, there are a few rated 0 in the charts.

There are so few LFS's that actually know any amount about keeping seahorses that could practically say there are none.

Not too sure what will all stick around and I am months from adding seahorses but here is my freshly planted future seahorse tank. A little cloudy, someone was playing in the sand to get all of those plants in place.
