there is no easy way IMO no matter what you do it's going to hurt you and the fish some what. if you care be humane as possible if not use one of the cruel and unusual methods mentioned above.

this topic has came up numerous times...the most humane way is to anesthetize a fish is with clove oil.You then add the fish in SW into the freezer for 20 mins ...just use google

I hope this thread doesnt become a hands on study...but if it does. I got a couple of damsels that...oh nevermind just kidding.

technically it is not poison but anesthesia.

are you from the Jeffery Dalmer school of euthanasia? is that how you would want to go over an anesthetic?

Carl

Poison kills stuff. You are poisoning it. And yes..I would MUCH rather die an instantaneous death than to slowly go numb in a concoction of cloying oil.

what ever happened to flushing fish down the toilet?

That's super cruel. How would you like death by drowning in raw sewage? Saltwater fish can live for 10+ minutes in freshwater.

Clove oil is an anesthesia. I'd personally rather go to sleep and never wake up than be thrown into a woodchipper...

Last time I looked, I wasn't a fish, so that comparison doesn't work. Saltwater fish can live much longer than that, more like a couple of days, depending on the species.

So is heroin/morphine/codeine. You never hear of a junkie anesthetizing himself to death. Clove oil is cloying and nasty. I have used it for toothaches. Give me the chipper over a slow death in that stuff anyday. Especially if I was a dumb fish and I had no idea what was coming. The anticipation would be the bad part.

I realize it's messy. But there is no point in letting aesthetics let you cause any duress to the animal.

I may be a little off topic but Ive always tried to save the fish rather than think of ways to euthanize. What ever happened to good old fashioned quarantine tanks and medicine and if the fish dies then you can blow it up, feed it to the cats, flush it or whatever else floats your boat! All that is just my opinion though!

This form is pretty nice one to read for referance if needed in the future.

Half the form is very helpfull and the other half is just helarious!

For sure, killing is the last resort. I've had FW fish get sick that we Qt'd for months and they just got worse and worse and were obviously suffering. Sometimes it comes to a point where we don't have the power to save them but we do have the power to end their suffering.

On a previous thread similar to this, I had suggested MS-222, clove oil or decapitation as the only acceptable means of euthanasia. This was based on what I learned from a zoo veterinarian. I have since learned that this is not completely correct.

The AVMA panel on euthanasia (the one you MUST follow if you work in any type of research facility) as well as Cornell University make the following recommendations:

Injectable agents:
1) Sodium Pentobarbitol
2) MS-222

External agents (dissolved in water):
1) MS-222
2) Benzocaine HCl
3) 2-Phenoxyethanol

Inhalants (bubbled in closed water container):
1) CO2
2) Inhalant anesthesia overdose - from Cornell

Physical:
1) first anesthetize with short acting barbituate or propofol
2) decapitation that MUST be followed by pithing (or vice versa)

Freezing:
*Only acceptable for fish < 5 cm total body length*
1) place deeply anesthetized fish in liguid nitrogen
2) place deeply anesthetized fish in water container then in freezer

This is all fresh in my mind as I just reviewed the research protocol involving some cichlids at my university today. The PI intended to use CO2 for euthanasia so I had to look this stuff up before talking to him, good thing I did because he could indeed use CO2!

Clove oil is not an acceptable form of euthanasia
