I generally try to save the fish, but there have been instances where you have a fish that needs to be "culled" due to deformity or it's just not able to be saved. In those cases I have used the freezer method (starting at reef temp) fed them to anemones or stomped/hammered them.
I think most of us generally consider how we'd want to go and the answer is usually quick and painless. I can't think of a better way to go than anesthesia or freezing to death but I think I'm like most people in that I don't keep anesthetics on hand except for alcohol and I think that has the potential to sting.
Given what I've seen here I'd put it in this order.
1. Anesthesia
2. Slow freezing
3. Stomp or hammer
4. Fast freezing
5. Severing spinal cord (or complete decapitation)
6. Toilet flush
There's no method that's perfect or painless (if you really care about animals) but if you find yourself in the predicament, you just do the best you can.
Why would anyone flush a fish. Just take it to your local fish store, or give it away for free to some local reefer.

Why would a LFS or local reefer want a sick or dead fish?
bastards!!!!!!!if i can get 3 damsels out of my dt there are going straight to the porcelin god but as of right now they will prob die of old age
:doff w/ the head, fillet, beer(s) and batter and into the pan
If your worried the off w/ the head may not be instant enough, hold it by the tail and flick its head as hard as you can, used to work on my sisters gold fish.
^^^^^^what he said^^^^sorry, but i think some of you guys are putting way to much thought into this subject. How many of you had a fish sandwich recently? Did that fish suffer? I really doubt they over-sedated the fish for a humane death.
bottom line is, the quicker the better. The hammer method can not be refuted. It's death in millisecond (provided you have a good aim). So why is this technique considered bad by some? Because it "looks" bad or "looks" painful. Not because it is inhumane.
Bottom line, if you are too bothered to use a hammer, ask someone else to do it. Otherwise just try to make it quick and do whatever makes you feel comfortable. I do not think the slower methods of so called "anesthesia" are inhumane, however i do think those methods are for people who lack the somewhat callous nature it takes to use a hammer or for people who want to "play" with anesthetics.
wow i feel de-sensitised. I grew up working on a charter boat, and have gaffed, stabbed, and filleted thousands of fish to death.
i cant belive some people take extra precautions to euthenize fish "humanely"
