the best way to kill a fish that is sick

I do hope you all know I was joking. I wouldnt waste fireworks like that. It normally is already dead by the time I get to it. If not It will go into a nano tank to die by itself or a ziplock baggy into the dry ice freezer.

I generally try to save the fish, but there have been instances where you have a fish that needs to be "culled" due to deformity or it's just not able to be saved. In those cases I have used the freezer method (starting at reef temp) fed them to anemones or stomped/hammered them.

I think most of us generally consider how we'd want to go and the answer is usually quick and painless. I can't think of a better way to go than anesthesia or freezing to death but I think I'm like most people in that I don't keep anesthetics on hand except for alcohol and I think that has the potential to sting.
Given what I've seen here I'd put it in this order.
1. Anesthesia
2. Slow freezing
3. Stomp or hammer
4. Fast freezing
5. Severing spinal cord (or complete decapitation)
6. Toilet flush

There's no method that's perfect or painless (if you really care about animals) but if you find yourself in the predicament, you just do the best you can.

I would probably put freezing further down the list. Even though a fish brain is more tolerent of low BP and O2, I still think decapitation is going to come in above freezing.

Agreed about moving slow freezing down the list. Someone pointed out earlier that it would be stressful on the fish. I think the fish would be freaked out for a while in the cold, dark confinement. And some of the jokes on this thread are actually far more humane than flushing a live fish.
A quick thump is simplest for many of us who don't have the materials., but as I posted earlier, it's much easier to do to the dinner you just caught than to the pet you paid for and nourished...

Why would anyone flush a fish. Just take it to your local fish store, or give it away for free to some local reefer.

Does the same go for dying corals? I'm not so worried about them feeling pain, but the smell! I don't want it in the trash and I sure wouldn't put the skeleton down the toilet. Generally I toss them over the fence into my disliked-neighbor's yard...

if i can get 3 damsels out of my dt there are going straight to the porcelin god but as of right now they will prob die of old age
bastards!!!!!!!
off w/ the head, fillet, beer(s) and batter and into the pan
If your worried the off w/ the head may not be instant enough, hold it by the tail and flick its head as hard as you can, used to work on my sisters gold fish.
:d

sorry, but i think some of you guys are putting way to much thought into this subject. How many of you had a fish sandwich recently? Did that fish suffer? I really doubt they over-sedated the fish for a humane death.

bottom line is, the quicker the better. The hammer method can not be refuted. It's death in millisecond (provided you have a good aim). So why is this technique considered bad by some? Because it "looks" bad or "looks" painful. Not because it is inhumane.

Bottom line, if you are too bothered to use a hammer, ask someone else to do it. Otherwise just try to make it quick and do whatever makes you feel comfortable. I do not think the slower methods of so called "anesthesia" are inhumane, however i do think those methods are for people who lack the somewhat callous nature it takes to use a hammer or for people who want to "play" with anesthetics.
^^^^^^what he said^^^^

they way i kill mice for my snake is put them in a doubled trash bag. and swing them as hard as i can against the table. supposed to be the best way other than the co2 method. idk, maybe you can do fish the same, just they'll be out of the the water for like 10 seconds.

Unfortunately I've had to cull more fish than most and as long as they aren't larger than about 6 inches I usually just scoop them out with the net smack them against a concrete wall quickly and firmly. That has always struck me as the quickest and most humane way to put them down. 99% of the time it is instant death. You feel real bad about the other 1% though.

wow i feel de-sensitised. I grew up working on a charter boat, and have gaffed, stabbed, and filleted thousands of fish to death.
i cant belive some people take extra precautions to euthenize fish "humanely"

Quick Death

Quick Death

I've never had to do it but I think the hammer method would be good :hammer: - quick, maybe not the least painful but quick enough where the pain is fast/short lived. This aspect sucks though.
