Mine is in 10" of water dialed at MAX. It might look like it is not doing anything at first. . .set it and walk away for an hour and then check it out ( if your deepest is 9" try dialing it to 5). Hope this helps.

Hey all, I'm setting up a 120 gallon sps dominated tank. I was wondering what you BM guys would suggest? I see a lot of smaller skimmers being talked about here. Anyone have any exp with some of the bigger models? I was thinking about maybe the BM220 CS cone skimmer or something. It's either one of these or an ATB 840 but thought if I could get a skimmer for half the cost that would do a good job why not? Just a little scared I might be buying something cheaper and then not be happy and end up with an ATB or Deltec in 6 months lol.

BM 180-CS (Cone) or BM 155-Pro. They both use AB pumps. You cant go wrong with the ATB 840 either, it just depends on how much you want to spend. Both will perform great.

i put mine in about 9" of water and had the dial on off and it was over flowing with water so i moved it up out of the water to about 6" and kept the dial on off and it started to skim really good then it stopped skimming. so i turned the dial to 2 and and it started to skim really good then a few hours later it was over flowing again so i moved the dial back to off and it started to skim really good again then few hours later back to nothing. sorry if you dont understand but its really hard for me to explain by email

Almost sounds like your sump level is fluctuating too much. If not then,

When these skimmers are new, set them so the bubbles break just barely above the bottom of the cup. Let it build for a day and be patient. If at the end of the day the foam head does not build and push toward the top of the cup, then close the wedge pipe a "little" more and wait another day.

When I constantly fiddle with my skimmers, it always slows the tuning process for me. I get impatient as well but when I give the skimmers time between adjustments (more than an hour:bounce3:) I find them much easier to tune and I'm not as frustrated.

Unfortunately, the first baffle after the skimmer, goes over then under, maybe this is the problem, trouble is, removing and refitting baffles whilst the the tank is running is a bit difficult!

You may be right about the new tank syndrome, it has been running for 5 weeks now, it is running zeovit and all params are good.

Thing is, even on the last tank my bm skimmer was leaking micro bubbles (you could see a layer of them in the sump compartment)

They just did not get through to the return because the baffles went under then over.

Not sure what to do now!

Can you switch the skimmer and drain to the opposite end of the sump, or is there no room? If there isn't room you could either get a piece of plexiglass and slide it in tight (no glue) and space it 1" off the bottom and a half inch away from the "over" baffle (I|I). That would tighten the skimmer area only 1/2 inch and solve your micro problem. The other option would be to put a long piece of coarse sponge across the top after the "over" section to trap micros. This may create a water level fluctuation issue when the sponge gets dirty over time, so you would have to clean it often.

Just a thought!

Where are you guys finding these? I know reef science has them...anywhere else?

Not sure where everyone else is finding them but many have gone through nuocean, reef aquatica or CADlights for theirs. I believe most of them are awaiting shipment from China right now. They may even be sitting in customs pending lead analysis-

Thanks, lots of good ideas.

I have managed to remove a baffle (whilst the water was still in the sump)

I removed the first baffle after the skimmer, so now the water flows under first.

At this moment i am siliconing the removed baffle in into the last compartment, so the water goes over under over, lets see if that makes a difference.

Only worry now is if the last compartment can hold enough water when the pump is turned off...gulp, have done my calculations, but it would not be the first time they are off.

I am using gold label sealant, which can be used underwater and is reef safe.

I have drained the last compartment of water, just waiting for the sealant to dry a bit.

Will keep you posted

Cool!

Nice thing about that configuration is the skimmer chamber should always stay constant-even with evaporation. Skimmers love stable water levels. My sump fluctuates only 1/8 of an inch with my current ato and it does affect the skimmate slightly.

I ordered a nac6a and am waiting for it to come in. It will be going under an 57g Oceanic illuminata. They stopped making the standard sump that came with it which was 24", my question is should just I order and 24 gallon sump? I know they need about 8" of water to sit in. Any help would be appreciated.

Here is my one year anniversary skimmer & tank pics! Bubble Magus rules!!!!

Hi guys,

I am getting more and more conviced that pretty soon I will be joining the BM club. So far i have e BM calcium reactor and very happy with it.
I run a 80g reef and I am looking for suggestions in which model should I go for.
Thanks

Basic tank spec: 100gallon, 80% sps, VSV, heavilly stocked - Emperor angel, yellow tang, naso tang, blue tang, sixline wrasse, 2 percs, 3 chromis.

Ok so I was pondering over a few skimmers to replace my awsome Deltec TS1250 due to a tank upgrade, I wanted something bigger and better.

My choices were:
Bubble Magus
BM180CS
BM200P
BM200E2

Reef Octopus
Extreme 200

Having heard great things about the bubble magus brand so far, and seeing the performance of one of their BM250's and also trying it out on my tank for a few days I was quite happy with the brand. And i chose the BM200P because it was cheaper than the E2, and was rated better than the BM180CS and it also was recommended by Ben @ Deepblue who i ended up purchasing the skimmer from, many thanks :D

Did i infact make a good decision? You be the judge.

- Unpackaging, this thing was in a huge box, with HEAPS of foam, arrived in perfect condition.
- Assembly was so simple, done in less than 10mins.
- Build quality is top notch, fat acrylic, beautiful workmanship

This is 5.5days of skimmate, during breaking in. The skimmer had about a 2 hour vinegar bath before getting installed. 3rd picture shows bubble size and a not so nice transition point where a small amount of gunk gets stuck. After 7 days the cup was 3/4 full (no pic).

Initial start up was fine, it is a tad noisey, i tried to reduce the amount of air to the intake by putting in a smaller bit of air tubing, it worked, less turbulance, no sound, nice foam head, but the foam head sat in the neck so i took it out and ran it as per factory.

Then the skimmer was cleaned, and this is where its at 3 days of skimmate :!: :!:

suggestions are all about 10 inches. how is your water level?

anyone have any ideas as to what will be the optimum water level for NAC6 and how to adjust the air level intake as well. thanks
You shouldn't need to adjust the air on these but if you want a finer bubble then go to HD and pick up a small drip valve in the sprinkler section (.45cents) and run it off the silencer. A JG (john guess) valve would be easier but the HD valves would work fine. Remember that restricting air will also raise the water level in the skimmer! If you install a valve and close it very slightly it will make a smaller bubble but will also raise the level in the skimmer. Some Deltec skimmers use the air instead of a wedge pipe for level adjustment.

Looks good.. It is working very well, 8" and 10" of water depth, look at the water collumn. There seems to be a huge amount of wasted space there. This is where you weight foot print X contact time. That is a big ole skimmer for such little contact time. They could improve the skimmer by placing the pump outside the skimmer. Overall it looks to be performing very well........ You did good.......
