Hey guys I'm having a hard time deciding what do do about the substrate, I've ran BB tanks for over 10 years and have always had great success, but I always miss the look of something in the bottom. I do not like star board, and I'll probably never do a DSB, what do you guys think about 1/4" layer of sand or crushed coral for pure aesthetic reasons, something I would vacuum every week if not more often, I do not mind the maintenance, but I am really ready to try something new. LMK

You're going to be really happy with the Oceans Motions unit, we have the 4-way on a sequence dart running as a closed loop and it's awesome. We got the adjustable nozzles from them too and those work really well too. We're also running an ASM G4 and have been pretty happy with it. Can't wait to see the tank.

I am with you on the sand, it makes a reef look like a reef. Maybe a blend of sand and CC would be easy to vaccum if you are willing to do it regularly. If not theres another cube thread here where sand was epoxied to starboard, it came out really nice!

Yeah I' ve seen those faux sandbeds but they are only nice at the beginning, after a while they grow all kinds of algae and it looks funky!

I can imagine that you would have to use something like an algae pack to clean them with and then the coraline would still take over eventually... I like sand.

Hey Chip, do you have a G4 or a G4plus? also how big is your tank?

It's a 180, but we've got an Oceanic Model 3 sump and a 100 gallon refugium so total system volume is probably fairly close to 300 gallons. I think it's just the G4, it might be the G4plus, I'd have to check the box.

I am having right now a Fake sand bed on a starboard and its starting to lose the white color it had. I am thinking maybe just be a little bit of sand just to see it more white than without it..

thank you for all the kinds words guys, it's what keeps me going, this tank would not be as fun if I weren't sharing it with everyone, pics coming in a minute, guess what I got today...........

BTW Chip just look at your pump, if it's a 5000 it's a G4 if it's a 9000 it's a G4+

Well I hope you guys are enjoying this as much as I am. I'm off to bed I'll be back tomorrow and hopefully I can start plumbing this weekend.

BTW for some odd reason I had the dimensions wrong, it is not 27.5" high, it is 29" high, which actually makes is a 200g :D

Zoos

the tank looks nice. Where in South Florida is the buddy that built it located? I might be in the market for a larger tank soon
