The First Fish decision... Opinions?

Today is my birthday! And I am going to buy the first fish for my 93 cube this week. Was wondering what y'all think would be a good first fish purchase.

Here are some of my thoughts...
  • Clownfish (Black&White or Mocha)
  • Cardinal
  • Chromis
  • A blenny of some sort

I'm looking for some personality, and hardiness with reef safeness.

Clownfish can be territorial, I would add at the end.

I think any others would be a good good choice.

I picked up a flametail blenny from The Corner Reef. Very cool fish and very active.

Yellow Watchman Goby with a Pistol Shrimp.

Cardinals have a poor survival rate from what I've seen. Especially the ones from MS.

Chromis are cheap, but not as pretty as the other options.

I have a Tailspot Blenny. He's brown, but his personality is awesome. He likes to find holes to hide in. He's currently sitting upside down in a hole in my rock. He actually corkscrews himself into it. It's hilarious to watch. He's been investigating an abandoned snail shell for the last couple days. I think he's trying to figure out if he'll fit in it. He won't, but he doesn't know that yet.

Goby and pistol shrimp are great combo, but if they decide to set up their cave in the back of a rock then not much action for your first fish.

Ive got a few PJ cardinals and theyve been very hardy but again not much personality in the cardinals.

Damsels are pretty hardy fish and some can be pretty colorful, they can be aggressive but none of mine ever have been. Theyre cheap too 5-10 bucks usually.

All depends on what your plan for fish in the end is really, you dont wanna add tangs of the same body shape at different times etc. I would make a livestock list of what you think your going to have when your tank is full and go from there.

Yep! I went with the bi-color blenny. Just did a 45min drip acclimation and it went right to the rock work.

Thanks for all the input and advice!

I have a coral beauty and a yellow canary wrasse if you're interested.

$15 for the cb and $10 for the wrasse.

Both reef safe

What no pictures?

Pick or it didn't happen lol

When it comes out of hiding i'll try and take a pic. Right now all the cameras I have are dirt crap. I promise i'll add one!

I have a open top so I'm concerned about the yellow canary. I'm interested in the CB but it would be the second fish (Is that too soon for an angel?).

Make a screen top for your tank. ANY fish can jump out of your tank. Ive came downstairs and saw my chihuahua chewing on a dried up snowflake clownfish. lolz

I have no idea if it's too early. He's not one of the biggest cb I've ever seen. And as far as I know they're pretty docile fish.
