The Foam/rock Projects Here Thread

I used Becketts Pond Foam.
Sure, great stuff is cheaper, but if you miss a spot with the epoxy, you'll end up with a junk wall.
i used this very foam and i just ordered 6 more cans for my next tank.....the tank that its in now is just over 2 years old..(click on my red house to see the build on it).i have no algae in my tank now...when it was new i had algae in it only cuz my rock i put in it had some on it from the tank i was upgrading from at the time....i battled that for 6 months doing manual removal and i beat it!...most new tanks will get what is called "new tank syndrome" and thats where most of the algaes come from....

Do the rocks have to be dry before foaming them? I want to make one but none of my lfs sell dry rock and it seems like such a waste to buy live rock and then dry it out...

I know, thats why i am asking if this can be done while the rocks are still damp...

I should clear this up, obviously the foam and the epoxy will take time to dry, but on my can of great-stuff, it says misting with water can help speed up cure time. It seems like a could kill two birds with one stone: speed up the time it takes the foam to cure and keep the live rock alive while the foam cures. Just curious if i could keep the entire structure damp enough to keep the rock live without negatively affecting how the foam dries? Also curious if the epoxy will cure correctly if the surface is damp?

Sorry if i wasn't clear enough...

if your going to do it with rock...yes make shure its dry or it may not stick to your rock....you need to leave the foam cure 24 hours befor you put it onto a tank...

get some dry rock online....you get all rock and no water so 50# of rock is 50# of rock not 30# rock and 20# water

i would advise you not to use great stuff.....i know many have used it but where are they now????? i have only seen one person talk about there dealings with great stuff and that was a very large tank....his luck wasnt perfect...even though he covered it with epoxy, it still was starting to break down after 6 months....

go and spend the money online and get some beckett black pond foam.....

yep, thats what i'm going thru, new tank syndrome
your experience convinced me to use becketts.
altho I still used epoxy/sand to coat the parts I hacked off, mostly as a piece of mind. where I didnt hack, bare foam.
'course its all covered in diatoms now :) my CUC is slowly taking care of that

I would probably use the becketts foam but I can find it in the uk.

I am probably going to use the bog standard expanding foam that builders use .

Hi

Going through the process of doing some of my rock/foam wall and wanted to know if people had any problems with their wall floating?

I tesetd mine in a water butt this weekend and it floated so I chopped a load of foam out.

Does everyone teste theirs or did you just stick it to the back of the tank and hope for the best?

I think mine would be ok when I stick it and I could kind of wedge it under the brace bars, but just wanted peoples thoughts??

Cheers

Just a question but how do you guys get the 'sand' look on the parts of the foam that are exposed? Do you throw some Live Sand on the foam when its still fresh or do you apply it after when the foam has hardened with a glue or resin?

either way works.

i personally did mine after it dried cause the foam swells out alot, so i waited until it dried & then used my fingers &/or a knife to remove the large "bubbled out" sections so it was more flush w/ the surrounding rock. then i put the 2-part epoxy on & covered that in sand.

here is the epoxy i used: http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/paa/paapt40.htm

I've built a wall and just siliconed it to the back of a 10 gallon tank. Do I need to fill the tank with fresh water and let it sit for a while to allow the wall to "cure"? I can't smell the epoxy anymore (bondo resin) but I don't want to screw things up either :)
