The Foam/rock Projects Here Thread

I've built a wall and just siliconed it to the back of a 10 gallon tank. Do I need to fill the tank with fresh water and let it sit for a while to allow the wall to "cure"? I can't smell the epoxy anymore (bondo resin) but I don't want to screw things up either :)

I would think its a wise idea ...

I filled and emptied mine at least 4-5 times (60G) and had powerheads in there to push water around.

Hi

Going through the process of doing some of my rock/foam wall and wanted to know if people had any problems with their wall floating?

I tesetd mine in a water butt this weekend and it floated so I chopped a load of foam out.

Does everyone teste theirs or did you just stick it to the back of the tank and hope for the best?

I think mine would be ok when I stick it and I could kind of wedge it under the brace bars, but just wanted peoples thoughts??

Cheers

What I did is I made a front piece (few bigger rocks attached together using the foam to form an arch, then on my wall rock I extended a small piece of egg crate forward so that I can zipped tie the front piece to the rock wall and also silicone the back of the rock wall to the back of the tank.

Hi

I am almost ready to fill my tank

I was under the impression that I could just fill the tank up with salted water and just cycle it.

Is this not the case????

Any help would be much appreciated as i dont want to waste any salt

My new tank is 1200 litres so as you can imagiine I dont ant to be emptying if I can get away with it

many thanks

I have been reading through this thread and must say this is a great one with all kind of ideas and info for anyone wanting to do a foam wall build. You brought up a issue that seems like many have had issues with. I may have missed it but want to make a suggestion. Something I plan on doing when I build mine will be to install high powered magnets within the eggcrate to hold the foam rock wall against the back glass. Just wondering if anyone has considered this or tried this. Seems to me that if using alot of rock in the wall or not enough could cause the wall to float up or bend over with the weight.

thats a good idea using tunze magnets...no worrys about rusting or even trying to epoxy them up so they dont rust.....just got to keep them in the foam with out getting ripped off/out.

Foam Rocks/Projects

Foam Rocks/Projects

Well I am going to attempt to make a foam wall back for my tank. I have been reading the threads and then looking on-line to find the best deals. I want to try to build mine using foam and the egg-crate design as I know the egg-crate is plentiful in my area.

What is going to be my best bet as far as the pond foam? I was almost sold on the Great Stuff product and found a very good deal on Ebay. Then I read on in the forums here that it will degrade over time not being UV protected. I do plan on covering with the epoxy/ sand covering. If I went the way of Great Stuff- Would I be alright using it but coating it EXTREMELY well with the epoxy? Or-- should I grimace and buy the more expensive stuff? I was trying to find out Becketts recipie- If theirs is UV safe, couldn't find anything on line.

So whats the popular, most used foam with little to no degrading, what holds up the best, looks the best for the $$??

well becketts is the best one out there i would think.....2 years this past july and still firm under a 175 halide 9 hours aday is what my becketts foam has ben in.

food for thought:

go buy pond foam for upfront cost ....

or.....

buy great stuff......cheap....
buy epoxy...depending how much you need could be costly....
mix the epoxy....
spread epoxy....make sure you get it in every where or your great stuff will break down......
now wait for epoxy to go to full cure...could be up to 24 hours or longer......

now all you got to do now is wait and see if your great stuff will last.?.?.?.?

buy the pond foam....less work...less time....less worry .....

I can see from the picture that this product is made by Rustoleum. Why don't you just call them and they can give you the info on MDS? Better to make an informed purchase.

i found the MSDS online i just couldn't get it to link
i think it would work because on another thread they talked about the harmful chem that some Epoxies have( i think its called rhiasen or something) but this one didn't have it. i'll try to post the link to the MSDS again
anyone else care to chime in
