The Foam/rock Projects Here Thread

on an acrylic tank you can do this...on a glass tank dont do it....it may stay for a wile but it will slowly peel up..then you'll be mad!

Here is what I did....

If you ARE going to do the foam-work inside the tank, take your egg-crate and cut to size. Then Silicone the egg-crate into the tank. After that go ahead and apply your foam. That way the foam has the contours of the egg-crate to help it keep it's shape and the silicone to adhere the egg-crate to the tank.

Is it easier to silicone the eggcrate to the back before adding foam and rocks or is it better to add foam and rocks outside the tank and then silicone the eggcrate to the back?

better to silicone it all as one..you will get more surface area for the silicone to hold all that foam down that way

Has anyone tried to apply the pondfoam directly to an overflow without first using the eggcrate? I am thinking I would like to try this a tank that has curved overflows in the back corners and would like to disguse them along with a back panel foam wall.

Thoughts on if this would work and hold up? Problems I might encounter?

My suggestion to everyone is to use more rock. My tank wall is 90% rock. First tape the backside of the egg crate to maintain a flat back. Once all dry remove the tape and it will fit tightly to the glass. Spray the foam on the egg crate and place the rock into it. As the foam expands it will fill in the gaps and form a strong bond. No need to ziptie the rocks. Pop any big foam expansion bubbles while the insides are still gooey to reduce buoyancy (which is a non issue if you use as much rock as I suggest). You will hardly need any epoxy and sand.

Very cool ideas. Im going to do a rock wall in my 600g very soon and I will use some of the techniques shown here.

Thanks Dave

HI All
We I just read all 25 pages and I can't wait to get started on my wall!
I want to make a 3 sided cove on my 40 breeder. Any ideas if I should make it in 3 pieces ( side back side) or 2 L pieces ( side 1/2 back) (1/2 back side)
Thanks Joe

Heres my wall. I think it turned out pretty well.

Did not zip tie just sprayed the foam into the creveses and between the rocks. Before I did this I placed 7 epoxy coated magnets in and around behind the rocks on the egg crate then spayed the foam making sure to cover the magnets.

Make sure you leave extra room for when you add epoxy and sand or you will end up having to chip away hard expoy and sand later. Not fun.

blue tape is where my magnets are placed within the rockwall
