The I know more than the experts guy

How many of you have that local guy that knows more than everyone, been in the hobby for a year and has advice on every subject like he thinks he Bruce Carlson and Julian SPrung combined. I HATE this guy!. We have a local guy that is posting his "unusual fishkeeping practices" thread on a local forum. He has been in the hobby for maybe a couple years and has had a least one thread that chronicalled his total fish and tank kill off in a "hey I need to restock what do you all have to donate to my rebuilding, no big deal there just fish" thread. Now he has a 210 bare bottom with no rock at all and he is keeping 4 blue tangs, 4 juvenile emperor angelfish, and 2 moorish idols. :mad2: He has done all the research and knows he has the skils that frankly nobody else does to keep all of this successfully. He was called out by another guy that this is not good, but his response is, I've done the research and I know that Morish idols dont do well in unestablished tanks but I am in the process of weaning them off sponge and on to frozen and pellet. The key according to him is to get healthy fish that have spent some time at the wholesaler getting over the stress of collection. I would also add that according to his build thread the tank had water added late October and was adding fish by early November, now I may be missing the time frame but the pic ressembled that of a tank that just had water added and the mix hadn't even settled down. How do you stop people from being so blatently irresponsable/ I would post the link but I am sure RC frowns on it.

The thing that gets me about these kind of people is that it's the livestock that suffer and not them.

Unfortunatley, there are plenty of people out there who are told over and over that their husbandry is quite lacking, but they will not listen. Rather than get yourself worked up about it, give the proper advice and if you can't take it anymore...walk away. I, personally. find it appalling, but I will continue to try to educate these individuals. sorry you have to deal with that in your local club.

Yes, I agree. And part of the job description for Team RC is to diplomatically suggest that they may not be doing the livestock a favor with their practices. I used to simply "ignore" them; now I try to find creative ways to suggest alternatives.

Let me guess, he is very wealthy and used to people yesing him to death no matter what bs he's laying down. Not generalizing wealthy people, but you know the type. T

We can get in trouble for abuse of dogs and cats why can't we also get introuble for abuse for fish. The are all living creatures! Thanks for allowing me to rant and having the same feelings as I do.

I love hanging out in a pet shop and hearing the advice some people give. Especially the people working there that don't even have a tank of their own.

Just the average joe, but the attitude that he's going to beat the odds. I know he would never post the same thread here because he would get blasted beyond belief by real stewards of the hobby.

Give him the ugly truth then walk away. If he comes back for advice try to help him out, but don't bang your head against the wall. IME this will get you labeled as a rude a whole, people don't want to hear the truth, generally speaking. Doesn't phase me though, see my signature :)

It used to be you could tell someone they were wrong without it being a crime... but with everyone trying to be as PC as possible everything is now offensive and almost nobody has a thick skin anymore. Coming from an Engineering background I guess it never bothered me to be told I was wrong... it happens to everyone. Sometimes someone else has a better idea and sometimes you're just flat out wrong. I never really understand why people can be so emotional or stubborn about it instead of admitting fault and moving on.

I remember reading a thread on here a few years back that posted in meticulous detail such a persons tank and its inevitable crash. Guy buys a big tank and stocks it too heavily right from the very beginning. He buys all kinds of impossible butterflyfish, a few magnifica anemones and one by one you see it all die. Was pretty sad.

Frankly I don't consider those people as being in the same hobby as I am in... they just happen to be associated with some of the same animals.

I don't recall if its the same guy I mentioned and I can't find the thread to verify but i know it was at least local, he was bragging about his blue spot sting ray in his bare bottom tank. I just can't wrap my mind around experimenting with animals in our hobby this way, it borderlines animal cruelty.

No, it is animal cruelty. You know things don't go our way sometimes and animals die. But to blatantly purchase animals and house them in unsatisfactory conditions is beyond lame.

I consider it a privilege to keep these animals and do my very best to give them the care they deserve and I NEVER purchase an animal unless I feel it has a very good chance at survival in my system.

There are 2 guys on my local site that I know of. All though one of them lives in NC, But he is on the loacal site. One of them does not even have a tank and gives advice all the time, He is still in the process of setting the tank up for over a year now. I gave him advice on a 24g seahorse tank he was setting up and he didn't take any and lost all of the seahorses. The 2nd guy from NC has been in the hobby less than a year and knows everything. He started with a large tank to begin with and gives people advice all the time, yet most of the problems he has never delt with. These guys read books and then give advice, Not realizing a lot of books are old and outdated and the info is wrong. And why do people think just because someone has a large tank they know what they are doing?

I along with a couple of other members just dealt with a similar situation here in another forum. I stated that what this person is doing is abuse pure and simple. Truly I think the best way to stop possibly things like this is to ignore the person in open forums. It sounds like this person wants to brag. If there is no one to brag to he/she will move on. I just won't deal with these types anymore. Their not here to learn or contribute anything meaningful just looking to boost their egos. When I see someone posting information that is wrong rather sometimes I will privately email the person looking for help rather than make something an issue in an open forum.

Today I heard something that made my jaw drop. I was in an all in one store, like a Petco, but this is a larger store(not a chain) and they actually have a decent saltwater selection. I only buy my dogfood there, but I do stroll through the saltwater section. A guy asked one of the "expert employees" how much would it cost me to start a small saltwater tank? Her response close to 10grand. WHAT? Did I miss something? 10grand to start a tank?? I pulled the guy aside and spoketo him, I gave him some advice to get started and sent him to a real LFS.

This is so true and sometimes the advice is so bad I just have to say something/ most of the time I just bite my tongue cuz I definitely don't want to be that guy that knows everything.

$10,000 as in equipment/tank only or equipment/tank/all the livestock?
10k as in a fish only tank 30 gallons or under. No way it should cost any where near 10k for a Fowlr that the guy wanted to keep a pair of clowns in. I mean a JBJ 28 with PC would be 300 bucks, There is no way the rest would cost 9,700. lol
