How often is everyone running some fresh water through the Venturi? Do you do it periodically or wait until you see a drop in performance?

I've taken my skimmer out every 6-10 months and given it a good scrub down and vinegar bath (running the skimmer for several hours).
Real wet so the vinegar/water solution fills the cup and runs down into the venturi.
And I've only cleaned it this often because I had to do some other kind of sump maintenance or ummm.... tank rebuild.
Other than that, no other skimmer maintenance other than normal collection cup cleaning.

My 36" skimmer is just humming along. I emptied the collection cup yesterday and was almost sick with the stench of the skimmate. My MRC was never ever this gross. It was god awful!

I love this thing

Cool. Thanks Dennis.

Usually about every 4-6 weeks I squirt a little vinegar in the venturi while the skimmer is shut down for a water change, and let it sit in the venturi for 10 minutes or so. When I restart the skimmer I suck in about 50ml of fresh water through the venturi.

It does seem to help keep a nice bubble blizzard in the skimmer body.

well it took about 3 days for my used skimmer to start working. I had given it a vinegar bath but it still took a while to get going. Maybe i got a little of the silicone inside the main chamber. Every day it got a little better and now its working like a horse. This is without a doubt better than my RO NWB-150

I've never ran fresh water through the venturi, should I do that? Iirc it's been running since last october-ish.

I know the purpose of the CCV tubing is to cut down on salt creep gunk building up, but I figure it couldn't hurt anything to flush the venturi from time to time with fresh water.

Hot/warm fresh water works well when wanting to clean a venturi... I use to get a coffee cup with hot water and let it suck thru from the venturi air hose.

This is what I do - Cup of RO water, nuke for 50 sec's and let the venturi hose suck it up through the venturi. I don't suck the whole cup of water at one time, about a quarter at a time wait 30sec's or so and then repeat until all the water is pulled in.

I do the same about 1x a month

Quick Update - my skimmer has been up and running about a month and a half or so. I bought the 30 inch model with a large collection cup. So far it's great. Much less adjusting needed than the Reef Octopus. I don't know if it pulls out an more gunk that any other similarly sized skimmer which is properly set up but do think it is much more stable at staying properly set up (i.e. not needing any adjustment to keep it running well).

Any noise issue I was having at the beginning took care of itself after the first few days. It is silent enough for me to have in my main living room.

Two big benefits over other skimmers which directly impact my perceived value in the skimmer: 1) The production of skimmate shuts down when the collection cup is full...no more overflows! 2) Draining the collection cup is simple as can be...no more taking the cup off every time you have to empty it. This is a HUGE one as my girlfriend often times has to empty it...much less complaining on her end!

Two minor critiques - I wish a better quality gate valve (one of the grey ones) was used for easier fine tuning. Oh well - that just gives me a project for the future. The first time I removed the collection cup the o-ring fell into the body of the skimmer. It was a pain in the *** to get it out of the body.

Given the ease of empty the collection cup without removing it from the skimmer...how often are people actually removing the collection cups for a thorough cleaning?

I agree on the stock gate valve. I replaced the gate valve on my 30" with a Spears gate valve. A little pricey, but smooooth.

I usually remove the cup on my skimmer and clean the neck weekly, it seems to work better that way.

I also considered this after reading some reviews but decided to try the stock valve. To me anyway, I find it better than the Spears I have on my Herbie drain!

Maybe I just got a bad Spears valve or a very good stock one!

Which size gate valve did you replace it with?
