The Life Reef Skimmer Club

We are not members yet, but we will be Tuesday when our VS3-36 (external) skimmer is delivered. We cannot wait! We will be running it with the Vectra M1. Vectra L1 will be our return/feeding our frag tank.

Lots of good reading here, we will be members within a few days!

Our lifereef skimmer will be in good company with our custom lifereef sump. Pics to come soon, still building.

But can they handle the pressure as well? What kind of head height can they handle?

If I get a different pump for this skimmer I'd want to also match it with my return pump and a third for a spare. I run a mag18 that is pushing ~750gph with ~12' head for my return.

If a waveline or jecod can handle that I'm all ears.

No first hand experience running with that type of head loss. But, literature says the dct8000 has a max head of 14.8 feet, and the dct12000 has a max head of 16.4.

Had my new SVS2-24 in sump running for 3 days now on an established 55 gallon tank. Still no foam. Lots of big watery bubbles if I raise the water level into the neck. Should it be taking this long to "break in"?

Curious about your comment that you have bubbles if you raise the water level into the neck. Where are you leaving the water level normally?

FWIW, I leave the water level just below the beck. I do tend to skim a bit wet, though.

Well it's not foam. Just large watery bubbles. I suppose they're on top of the water line as as well when the water level is lower within the body but I can't see them as well. There must still be some oil or residue in the water column that's interfering with it or something.

I had the water level where it's recommended to be set at initially - an inch below the top of the body.

These are pic's of my setup that I sent Jeff:

And this was his response:

You should not see foam falling constantly down into the cup. My foam falls so slowly that you’d need a time-lapse photography to see any movement. Foam that is too wet will fill the cup quickly.

"so far all I'm getting is water. The foam comes up to the top of the cup but it's nothing but clear water."

All I can report about foaming is that it is all up to the water, not the skimmer. Once the water is able to foam you’ll get some.

"I was getting foam but it was clear water dumping into the cup instead of the tea color water. Just emptied a cup of very light tea color liquid."

Clear water or watered down skimmate could be due to the skimmer water level being set too high (most likely) or not a lot of organics or proteins to be removed. The color of the skimmate is partly due to how high the skimmer water level is set and of course what is in the water that is being removed.

Thanks for the responses. I went ahead and ordered the external skimmer from Jeff. Great guy who took the time to educate me on skimmers and many other things. One of those guys that explains everything so well the choice of a skimmer became easy.

You will not be disappointed. Jeff makes great skimmers.
