LifeReef Hangon Skimmer on a 40 breeder?

LifeReef Hangon Skimmer on a 40 breeder?

Hi All, glad I found this post. Question. Many years ago I had a 240 gallon sump less reef tank. I had a Life Reef Hang on Skimmer. The 240 is long ago gone. but I'm setting up a 40 gallon breeder, which will be sump less. Can I use the Life Reef Hang on Skimmer on the 40 breeder, or is it way or big?
Thanks for any info.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't use a LR HOB on a 40 breeder. I know I would. I'm running a SVS3-24 (in sump) on a 43GAL (total) tank and love it.

I guess you may not like it from an aesthetics point of view, but it wouldn't bother me personally.

Said it before and I'll say it again... Those Life-Reef skimmers are about as sexy as a skimmer can get LOL. When the day comes that my current one dies I will be getting one of these.

Only one that that really sucks about lifereef.

You never get to go skimmer shopping again after you own one..... Oh wait!

These things are animals! Love mine

Very nice setup. Do you plan on putting your heater in the sump?

Thanks and Yes. I ordered two 300W heaters that are 10" in length so they will fit right where the water flows from the foam filter to the last compartment. Temp probe will be in the first compartment. Will be setting up soon. I'll post a link to my build thread here.

Hello all I have been reading many post on this skimmer and after going through Vertex, ASM, Reef Octopus, Red Sea, Aquamaxx, and RLSS I have finally ordered a Life Reef SVS2-24. I am still very happy with the RLSS it has been the best needle wheel of the bunch. I like the fact that the Life Reef does not rely on a specific modified pricey needle wheel that can be obsolete in a couple of years. The fact that any pump within a specific ghp rate is awesome. I plan on running it with a MAG 9.5 or the pump from my current skimmer a Waveline 4000. I wish I would have known about these skimmers sooner could have saved me a lot of money.

Are you planning on running it on the 450 gallon in your signature? You'll need more firepower.

Also, the svs3's (with the thumb screw flange) offer much more flexibility, cleaning, and maintenance advantages.

Yea. If I could do it over I would have ordered the svs-3. The 2 is a pain to clean out sometimes. But I only do it once every 6 months.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how much extra heat is dumped in the tank with a Mag 12 pump or a Sicce Syncra 5.0 over the Mag 9.5? I've got a SVS3-24 on order for my tank with a net volume of around 60 gallons. I hear the bigger the better, but if those larger pumps dump alot more heat in my tank, not sure i'd want to do that. In the wintertime it's fine, but living in Charleston SC it gets hot in August, and I'd rather not heat up my house even more running a chiller. Maybe having a bigger pump wouldn't benefit me much because I've got a relatively smaller volume of water anyway.. thoughts?

Just realized it's 450 liters. ;)

Still though, I think you'll be happier with a mag 12, or even 18.

I actually use a mag 18 for my water change and it is strong as hell. The mag 18 pumps the water through 30 feet of 3/4 inch tube to my sump. If the mag 9.5 doesn't work out I'll use the 18.
Thanks for the heads up.

New sump

New sump

So I bought a 280 DAS tank that's 8 feet long, been looking at lifreef and talking to Jeff, he recommends the in sump skimmer so the lf300s instead of the regular lf300, pros and cons to each from you guys that have his system would be appreciated it,and how big of a skimmer would you go with and is the 300 big enough for a 280 or do i need to have him make me something bigger? And please post any pictures of the lf300 if you have one
Thanks,Tony

I'm wondering the same thing. The 9.5 already heats my 55 gallon tank quite a bit and may be an issue in the summer. I don't think I'd be able to use a 12 if it produces more heat. I may have to switch to a DC pump anyway.

Right now my skimmer is hardly ever foaming so I don't know what's going on with that.

The Mag 9.5 raised my tank 2 degrees, I had a Sicce Syncra 3.0 and it didn't raise my temp, I just switched over to the Jecod dcs-6000 and have no temp increase even at full throttle.
