The Life Reef Skimmer Club

I found my venturi was loud as well during the break in but became near silent once the skimmer started to produce. I only ran it for a short time on a temp system as it now awaits the big system to boot up but I had no issues with it after break in.

I just made a silencer with a pill bottle and it is a bit better. I might have to relocate the tank to another side of my living room.

I just watched your video. It sounds like mine does when it's first starting up, but mine quiets down after it's fully up and running. With that being said, I'm going to guess that it'll quiet down once it breaks in.

Here's a video of mine running. I didn't realize it when I was making it, but the fan I keep running in the living room is the loudest thing in the video (in person, I think I'm numb to it since it's on 24/7, but in the video, it's noticible).

Thanks for posting your video Pablos. My skimmer sounds exactly like yours and it drives me nuts. I've had the skimmer for a couple months and it has not got any better. I made a homemade silencer out of a 2 foot 1" pvc and it helped a little but I think the main sound issue is the turbulence in the skimmer body. Cabo's video is what I was expecting for sound. Maybe we should contact Jeff and see if he has any ideas? I'm getting close to selling mine and going back to my silent Aquamaxx. Again, thanks for the video, I thought I was the only one "hearing things" :)

The actual skimmer noise isn't bad and you should get used to it if you stop listening for it. Hopefully it's in a closed cabinet/stand too.

Mag 18 on a 24 inch? Why? I would recommend the DCT-6000. It works well on mine and better than the mag 9.5. I don't like mags due to their inefficiency and excessive heating of the water.

Jeff uses a mag 18 on his 24. The bodies can handle more gph than the previously recommended submersible pumps.

I'm surprised some are loud though. dc9000 6/6 very quiet here still. I don't remember it even being loud during the short break in period.

The only thing I can think of is an obstruction of some sort. Maybe try flushing the air feed from the cup end with a few basters full of warm DI water? Another thing I'd try is to isolate the source by removing the airline at the venturi end ( does the noise come from the venturi or from the hose/coupling at the cup end?) and work from there.

I made a silencer from a pill bottle and it is a bit better also as others have stated it might be the turbulence. I hope that with time it quiets down.

I remember someone saying he used a Mag 12.

Mazzei is an option you can get with any Life Reef skimmer. I have a 1078 on my VS3-36 and am happy with the results. I don't have experience with the spa injector but from what I have heard there isn't much difference

I am also running a 36" on a 180, could have easily gotten away with a 30". I think if I had went with a 24" the skimmer would be constantly producing skim mate and maybe never catching up to the bio load

I ran a 48 on a 180, a 30 & 36 on a couple of 120's. These skimmers are very flexible with different size tanks. Heck, I actually had a 12" extension I added to the 48 and made it a 60" on my 180.
