The Life Reef Skimmer Club

Just thought I'd show off my new lifereef system for my SCA 50. It's been up and running for about a month and I couldn't be happier, the fit and finish of his products are second to none. During the build process Jeff was exceedingly helpful and he convinced me to run no doors on the stand allowing me to fit a larger sump (21"x21"), which I am very glad he did. My media reactors should be shipping this week which will complete my build. For reference I'm running a mag 12 on the skimmer (Flanged 24" model) and a Jebao 8000 for the return.

That is a narly kink, braided tubing would be better there it's less likely to kink. Better yet, just put a 90 barb x slip fitting there.

Sounds like a good excuse to give the wife.

"But I had to spend that money on that new equipment. All the experts on the forum said I had to."

Being single the only excuses I have to give are to myself. Surprisingly it never takes much convincing haha.

48" on order will it be too much

48" on order will it be too much

All,

I have a 40" Lifereef on order for a 100g heavily stocked mixed reef DT 40g sump in a basement configuration. Talking with Jeff I wanted to be future proof for a larger DT in the future. Question is will this tall boy skim with this size or am I way over kill?

Why don't you get the 24" flanged version and an extension tube so when you do upgrade to say a 300 gallon system you can just add the extension and a mag 18 pump and your good to go!

My jebao dc9000 recently died (almost 3 years, run on the LR30"). It always skimmed very well, so I purchased a new dcs9000, wondering if I should have just gone with the 12000, but oh well I know I've had great success with the 9000, after reading a couple people running 18000's through 36'ers I wonder if I would have gotten better results from 12000.

Or better yet just get the 30 or 36 flanged and you're good to go.

Don't think more head pressure through a Venturi is ever a bad thing lol. Also, the benefit of running a dcp 18000 is you can run it at 50-75%.

Running mine at 100% [emoji4]

It is a decent sized pump though taking up some room especially with the screen guard screwed on which I left on to protect the venturi from any possible larger debris or snails.

It is a big pump I took my dcp 8000 out of the box and went what the **** did they do to this thing lol

Probably overkill, but I'm getting a Fluval SP4 for my SVS2-24. I figure Jeff is using a Mag18 on his 24 so why not? I'll be running 3/4" tubing and a ball valve, just in case I need to dial it down. Curious to see what the current draw will be as well as the air draw. What model of Dwyer air meter are people using? Is it easy to hook up and do I need to get any special fittings for it to set it up and read properly?

LQT - please let us know your experience on the fluval and air meter readings. I am curious as well. .. And also the noise level of the sp4. The mag 18 I am running is too loud for me to continue running it.

Will do. My pump should come in sometime next week. The SP4 is supposed to be one of the most quiet AC pumps available. Apparently, it is a very high quality pump made with Askoll motor blocks.

Aside from the noise, were you able to get any performance improvement when going from the Sicce 3.0 to the Mag18?

My Mag18 was very quite. Put a silicone pad under it. I got my from walmart.

What pump are you guys recommending on a 60 inch skimmer ? Would the Panworld 100PX be good ?

The answer is NO. You need more, the panworld 150 ps I have works great. I have to tune it back. Just wish they made a pressure rated pump that was in between. The 150ps at 350 watts is more than I care to have. And noisier.

Why not do a jebao they are whisper quiet? Also, I find my mag 12 is quieter then the Venturi since I put it on a silicon mat.

There are 2 reasons why I feel the mag18 is not for me on this 24 inch.
1- Something's wrong with it (mag18) I think. It is just too loud
2- As you can see in the video, it just looks like too much water is moving through the system not giving the bubbles time to dwell and collect.

Now again, if my tank were more heavily loaded down with fish, the bubbles might have more to interact with but as it stands I only have 3 fish.

As someone mentioned earlier, I could just feed more! I'll use that as a last resort.

There is something else I think I noticed though. A few weeks ago I pulled the check valve out of the mazzie as someone mentioned it would allow more air draw. It might have, however I don't think the air is coming in now in as tight a stream and this maybe is what is causing the massive bubbles with the mag18 rather than the dwell time or flow through the system. I may put the valve back in with the mag18 and see what that does. As for me, I don't think removing the valve was a good idea.
