I remember it being 8" in diameter but what was the height 30" or 36"?

What pump and injector will you be using?

I really like the design, If I had known that was an option I would have went with it instead of my VS3-36

30" to the top flange. With the upper flange and cup, 42" total height. Using my Panworld 100PX, Mazzei 1078 injector pulling 25-28 scfh. The 8" body can handle the added air draw. Starting to get a foam head as of now. I should be able to tweak the water level another 1/2" up by this afternoon.

Been running for 7hrs now and starting to look good.

Looks great but running at approx. 800l/h of air seems low. Most 8 inch skimmers today run 1000l/h plus with ease and stand at half the height.
With that volume I thought it could handle much more air.

Looking for more contact time with a shorter body. Was running the 60" but was in the way of my overhead cabinet doors. Right now it's running real good and getting better. I tried to push the air draw in the 6" body to 25-30 scfh but it was too much, unstable foam head. This is why I went with the 8" body to handle 25-30 on the air draw. Remember, still have the small dia neck.

IS this normal bubble production? My skimmer body is completely white when running.

That does look odd. I have a Mag 12 on the 30" and has denser bubbles as well.

I think a Mag 12 on that size skimmer will have a tough time skimming dry bless you set the level lower. That video shows pretty wet skimming.

life reef sump & skimmer mod

life reef sump & skimmer mod

I have had a lifereef sump and 24" skimmer since 2003. It still works great!
I have had many years to look at Jeff's sump design and have made a small mod to his sump skimmer compartment. I glued two small 2 x 10-1/4" plastic strips on each side of the skimmer compartment, and then made 1/4" plastic inserts of varying height which slide over the two end pieces to control the water level in the skimmer compartment, the water pressure against the plastic insert seals the skimmer compartment . I tried varying heights of inserts and settled on one that gave me a water level at a constant height of about 8" in the skimmer compartment regardless of the water level in the sump. The gate valve is about 2/3 covered and flows straight back into the skimmer compartment and is dead silent. The water from the skimmer compartment overflows over the plastic insert into the filter pad compartment. This setup allows the return water from the tank and the skimmer to recirculate in the skimmer compartment IMOP increasing the efficiency of the skimmer.

Pics?

There are two sliders one on each side of the vertical rails that are under the water, which holds the insert in place.

Would the svs2-24 skimmer be overkill on a 50 gallon cube with a 15 gallon operating sump level ?

I was thinking maybe I could use a lesser rated pump maybe a sicce3.0 or eheimcompact3000+ or maybe just go with the mag9.5 jeff recommends

Input appreciated. Looking to try something new (in this case old school but tried and true technology)

I cannot see the elbow on the outlet at all when looking at my vs24 from the same angle and I'm only running a mag9.

You don't seem to be pulling a lot of air... may want to check your venturi and air line

Hmmm Maybe its time to clean the Venturi, thanks for the feedback guys.

I feel the air being drawn is something that a pinwheel skimmer company started and the consumer has just followed as gospel. you never hear of any of the Down Draft/Beckett skimmer companies stating theirs. Even though the physics of skimming is air in a given chamber, the way it is delivered can be a factor.

I do agree with Bayoupr that the neck size is a big factor. I am now a big supporter of using a venturi on a skimmer
