Do the mag drive 9.5 and 12 run on the hotter side? Did anyone notice an increase in tank temp?

For a pump with equal flow rates i think they all run about the same watt rating, unless you go to DC of course. So there shouldnt be that much heat difference between mags and others.

I have a mag12 9 and 7. I do notice about a 1 degree increase when they are all on. I'm moving my 9 and 12 to run externally on my new tank build.

I run a sicce psk1000 on my current skimmer (needle wheel) and heard that the mags run hotter than normal. I don't have too much wiggle room with temp as I don't have a chiller. Just one of the reasons I'm thinking about going jebao dc6000 - but with that I'm concerned about long term reliability... Pros and Cons.

I run a Mag 12 on my tank and it increases the water temp 1 degree. My tank is 93 gallons and maybe about another 20 gallons in sump etc.

Btw there are other factors to note than just the just the pump. More water volume in the tank and sump will not be as affected by the heat of the pump than smaller volumes. Also depends on ambient room temperature to some extent.

Also, the amount of water in your sump and whether or not you bypass any of the return into the sump.

I bypass about 25% of the return flow back to the beginning of the sump. Which most likely affects my water temp

I already realize that water volume and ambient room temp are factors in how warm or cool a tank will run. Heat is a concern for me during the summer months, that's why I was asking about elevated temps when using mag pumps in comparison with similar wattage pumps.

Understood. Just saying that there is a caveat. 1 degree on 90g tank maybe 0 degrees on a 180 or 2 degrees on a 60g.

I'm pretty sure that wattage is wattage. College physics was a long time ago, but I think if a pump consumes 120 or whatever watts that's what's going into your tank no matter what.

The only way to reduce heat input into your tank is to choose a pump that simply uses fewer watts to get the job done. That's why I switched to Water Blaster pumps, they move more water for the same or less watts.

Yes but a 100 watt heater in a 50 gallon tank and a 100 watt heater in a 240 gallon tank won't change the ambient water temperature the same.

Blah, blah, blah, blah. Keep your tank cleaner and you won't have all of the dirty stinky skimmate. :)

Just joking Dennis.

It just arrived at our office tonite. The battery is charging.
I own the D800 and most shots in my build thread are with that.

I knew you had the D800. That's why I mentioned it.

Let me know what you think (especially the autofocus). I'm curious about the electronic shutter and the camera's dynamic range. I really like my D800E and I don't think I can justify trading it for the D810 even though I'm tempted.

D800 is a good camera body, if you want to upgrade try some good quality glass lens's. I don't know that much about Nikons ( I am a Canon guy)
