The Life Reef Skimmer Club

There wouldn't be an upgrade. It was more out of curiosity.

My main 3 lenses are Nikon
14-24mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm f2.8 zoom lenses.

These are killer. Equal to the Canon L glass.

At the office I do mostly product photography. Not sure if I'll see much difference from my own 800 other than the extra sharpness from no low pass filter. We'll see. But it's a huge upgrade from the 200 that I was using for all these years. And we also got the 85mm PC-E. Played with that yesterday on my 800 and it's pretty sweet.

Those 3 you have are the holy trinity of nikon glass. That 14-24 was my money maker when I was shooting a lot of architecture. I also have the 24mm PC-E but really liked that 14-24 when i didn't need the perspective correction.

I don't want to be critical and continue this watt war, lol, but pump design also has something to do with whether or not x pump runs hotter than y pump (it's more than just watts are watts).

Ultimately though, I retract to my original question if somebody with the mag 9.5 noticed a hotter tank temp after running a different pump with similar wattage. I've heard complaints about mags running hotter and this is why I ask, if it's relative to say a sicce psk1000 I may just get the mag over the jebao because I have a feeling it will last me longer.

Just remember mags were designed to run in water or inline... so you have flexibility. They won't put as much heat in the water when ran inline...

With that said, there are external only pumps known to put a lot of heat into the water, more so than a mag does... every pump is different

Hey rEeFnWrX, i started this thread. I'll take it OT if I want to. heh heh ;) :D

But yeah... emptied that cup last night and have about another inch of skim this morning. :)

I had always heard this about Mags as well and it was a concern of mine. However I am using the Mag 12 and it hasn't changed my tank temp by more than a degree.

How are you adjusting your white balance? I have the D5200 and it is currently set to auto. Still way touch blue from my Kessil's. I am using VR len's

svs-30 with mag 12 on 90gallon. took less than a week to produce skimmate. still need my heater to maintain temp at 75 ish degrees Fahrenheit.

it is now in a steady 9 inches of water, i emailed jeff and he said no problems. its the same as closing the gate valve. no need to worry about a "t" for a siphon break either because it was in sump. siphon maybe a problem if my skimmer was drastically above my sump.

this is the last skimmer i will ever buy. i just stuck my arm into my tank and adjusted a power head. it never stopped foaming. it may have decreased but never stopped.

i am absolutely satisfied with this choice. i hope that when he retires some one is there to follow in his footsteps and continue his designs and product support and devotion to both customer and curious looker alike. this may be "old school" technology but it works so much better and more stable than anything i have owned.

like said before by another member, blah blah air draw, blah blah heat, blah blah watts. never been happier with a skimmer.

LifeReef Skimmer thread, please PM one another for camera info. Thanks

Just needed camera Info to take better photos of my lifereef skimmer!

Does anyone else notice that when feeding frozen PE Mysis that foam production stops? my VS-30 takes a good hour before it starts producing again. it dosent seem to be an issue when feeding brine.

I haven't ever owned a skimmer where this doesn't happen.

If your not going to shoot raw, you're going to have to experiment with the white balance to get it right when the tank lights are on.

Good to hear. What major differences are you finding between the LifeReef and the Reef Dynamics. More skimmate than the RD.

The oils! that would do it.. should have known better.

Im still learning my camera and will figure out the setting for shooting raw.

Purchased one of Jeff's sumps back in 91 still using it. Have been using a vs3-24 for about fifteen, awesome craftsmanship and great service over the phone

Every skimmer I had reacted to feedings, mostly frozen Mysis. OK, I am still messing with my "Older" D3100 Nikon.
